Whose Country is the Capricorn Coast?

The mainland Capricorn Coast is the Country of the Darumbal People, its Traditional Owners. The Keppel Bay islands are the Country of the Woppaburra People (Great Keppel is Wop-Pa; North Keppel is Konomie), who hold recognised native title over the islands. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.

Why is it called the Capricorn Coast?

For the Tropic of Capricorn, the line of latitude that crosses the region at Rockhampton — marked in the city by the Capricorn Spire. The coast, caves and region all take their name from it.

What is the Singing Ship at Emu Park?

A striking coastal memorial to Captain James Cook, built in 1970, its concrete sails and pipes designed to "sing" in the sea breeze. It stands on the ANZAC-themed headland walk at Emu Park. See our Emu Park guide.

What is the history of Great Keppel Island?

Long the home of the Woppaburra People, the island later carried grazing leases and, from the late 20th century, a well-known beach resort. Tourism continues today around its beaches and the wider Keppel group. See our Great Keppel Island guide.
