Beaches & the southern reef
Great Keppel Island is the star — a natural beauty on the southern Great Barrier Reef with 17 white-sand beaches, clear water and a fringing reef you can snorkel from the shore, plus bushwalks to lookouts. It's low-key and unspoilt (the island is in a tourism rejuvenation phase), reached by ferry from Rosslyn Bay near Yeppoon. Go for the day or stay over. Yeppoon & Emu Park
The Capricorn Coast's main town, Yeppoon, is a relaxed seaside spot about 40 minutes from Rocky — a pretty foreshore, cafés, a lagoon and the Keppel Kraken water park, and the launch point for the islands. Byfield National Park
North of Yeppoon, Byfield National Park and the surrounding state forest offer a wilder side of the coast — towering dunes, rainforest, freshwater creeks and quiet beaches, popular for 4WD touring, camping and paddling. It's a rugged, scenic escape and a great add-on for the adventurous. Combined with the Keppels and the coast towns, it rounds out a Capricorn Coast trip from your Rockhampton base beautifully.

The Capricorn Coast is close — the main seaside town of Yeppoon is about 40 minutes' drive north-east of Rockhampton, with Emu Park a little further south. Great Keppel Island is reached by ferry from Rosslyn Bay, near Yeppoon (about 45 minutes from Rockhampton to the terminal, then a short crossing). Day trips and transfers run regularly. Yes — this is the southern Great Barrier Reef. The Keppel Islands, off Yeppoon, have accessible fringing reefs you can snorkel straight from the beach, making them one of the easiest and most affordable ways to experience the reef. It's a quieter, less-crowded stretch than the far north, and an easy add-on to a Rockhampton trip via the Capricorn Coast.
