Rockhampton Zoo & gardens
One of the nicest surprises in Rockhampton is how much green space — and free wildlife — the city offers. The free Rockhampton Zoo sits within the beautiful 1869 Botanic Gardens, with more parks at Kershaw Gardens and bushland lookouts on Mount Archer behind the city. It's a relaxed, low-cost, family-friendly side of Rocky. Here's what to see.
Koalas, chimps & more — for free
The council-run Rockhampton Zoo is free to enter — a genuine local treasure. Wander shady paths to see koalas, a troop of chimpanzees (a long-time favourite), dingoes, freshwater crocodiles, wombats, cassowaries and otters, plus native birds and reptiles. It's compact enough for an easy hour or two and set right in the Botanic Gardens. Donations support the animals; check current opening hours before you visit.
Botanic Gardens & Kershaw Gardens
The Rockhampton Botanic Gardens (established 1869) are among Queensland's oldest and loveliest regional gardens — heritage trees, palms, a Japanese garden, lagoons and shady lawns, with the free zoo inside and a café. Across town, the native-focused Kershaw Gardens offer rainforest walks, a waterfall feature and a popular water-play area for hot days. Both are free, easy and a lovely way to slow down in the tropical heat.
Mount Archer lookouts
Behind the city, Mount Archer climbs to sweeping lookouts over Rockhampton, the Fitzroy River and out to the coast — superb at sunrise and sunset. Walking trails lace the national park, including the elevated Nurim Circuit boardwalk through the treetops, where you might spot wildlife. Excellent — and easy on the budget. Add the lookouts and boardwalk at Mount Archer and you have a full, low-cost family day in nature — one of the best things about visiting Rocky with kids.
