Why go to Grafton from Sunshine Coast
From the Sunshine Coast, Grafton is a long way, and that is the whole reason this page exists. Driving it yourself is five hours or more each way through Brisbane and the Gold Coast, which is not a day trip anyone enjoys. On the coach it is a long but easy day: the earliest start of our three regions, a seat you can sleep in, and the same four hours under the trees as everyone else. Most Sunshine Coast passengers on the Carnival of Flowers coach tell us it is the only way they would do it, and Grafton is further.
The trip is about 430 km and around 5½ hours each way once the Brisbane and Gold Coast pickups are counted, all of it on the Bruce Highway, the M1 and the Pacific Highway. That is the number to weigh. On a coach it becomes time to read, doze or watch the Northern Rivers go past; behind your own wheel it is the whole day's energy spent before you see a tree. The coach itself runs one route from the Sunshine Coast through Brisbane to the Gold Coast and on to Grafton, collecting passengers from all three regions on the way, so that the tour runs on days when no single region fills a coach. Your pickups
Maroochydore is the first stop on the whole route, so the coach leaves on time whether or not the rest of the Coast is awake; Caboolture is the second. Sunshine Plaza's coach bay has early parking nearby, and the Caboolture stop is beside the Bruce Highway for anyone from the southern end. From Caboolture the coach goes on to collect Brisbane and Gold Coast passengers before turning for the border.

Times are confirmed in your booking email; on the busiest festival days, Jacaranda Thursday and the parade weekend, we may run a second coach with a shorter route, and if so the email will say.

Mid-morningOver the border and morning tea
The M1 crosses the Tweed at the border, where the clocks go forward an hour, and becomes the Pacific Highway. Morning tea, included, is a stop near Ballina: coffee, something to eat, and a leg stretch before the last hour south to the Harwood turn-off and the run west along the Clarence into Grafton.

Into town over the 1932 Bendy Bridge and straight onto a slow coach loop of the jacaranda streets with commentary: Pound Street's 1910 avenue, Victoria Street and the cathedral, the river end of Prince Street and Memorial Park, a pass by See Park. Two short photo stops. About forty minutes, and the point of it is that you then know where you want to spend your free time.

Drop-off beside Market Square, the festival hub. Roughly three hours for the markets, Christ Church Cathedral, the Regional Gallery's Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award, Schaeffer House and lunch under the trees at your own expense. On Jacaranda Thursday the whole CBD is the festival; on parade day the floats come down Prince Street around midday.

Which day to choose
Any day in the festival window, Friday 30 October to Sunday 8 November 2026, is a good day for the trees, which usually peak across that fortnight. Jacaranda Thursday, 5 November, is the day with the closed main street, the markets through the CBD and the biggest crowds; the parade is on the final weekend; a midweek day in the first week has the same flowers and far fewer people. The departure calendar shows the days we run from Sunshine Coast; if you want a day that is not listed, ask, because we add coaches when a date fills.
The drive south, stretch by stretch
From Maroochydore the coach takes the Sunshine Motorway to the Bruce Highway and runs south through the Glass House Mountains in first light, which on a clear morning is the best half hour of the day. Caboolture is the second pickup, then the Bruce into Brisbane, the Gateway around the city to the Chermside and Roma Street stops, and the Pacific Motorway out through Logan to Helensvale on the Gold Coast. From there it is the M1 down the Coast, the Tweed River at the border where the clocks go forward an hour, and the Pacific Highway's long straights past Byron and Ballina, where morning tea is. South of Ballina the country turns to sugar cane, the Harwood mill marks the turn for Grafton, and the road follows the Clarence west past Maclean to the Bendy Bridge. Maroochydore to Grafton is about five and a half hours including the four pickups on the way. It is a long morning; a good share of Sunshine Coast passengers sleep through the Brisbane leg.
Planning the day if you are coming from the Sunshine Coast
A 5.15am pickup means a 4.30am alarm for most people, so treat this as an early-night-before tour. Maroochydore has early parking near Sunshine Plaza; Caboolture is beside the highway for anyone from the southern end or the hinterland. Bring breakfast for the coach, because morning tea is three hours away; bring a jumper and a neck pillow. The return to Maroochydore at about 7.45pm is late, and the Caboolture return around 7pm is earlier, so if you live between the two, Caboolture may suit better in both directions. Passengers from Noosa should allow forty minutes to Maroochydore at that hour. If you can, book a midweek day rather than Jacaranda Thursday; the long day is easier when the free time is not spent in crowds.
What you will see in Grafton
Grafton is a river city of about 20,000 people on the Clarence, with unusually wide streets laid out for bullock teams and more than 1,700 jacarandas planted along them from the 1880s. The oldest planting still standing is Pound Street's Jacaranda Avenue, 42 trees on each side put in by a local nurseryman in 1910; it was the first home of the festival in 1934 and remains the classic view, two rows of century-old trees meeting over a purple road. See Park at its western end is the arboretum, with ponds, suspension bridges and the densest canopy in town, and it is where the trees are lit at night through the season. Prince Street is the main street; Market Square beside the clock tower is the festival hub and your drop-off. Victoria Street, a block towards the river, is quieter, with jacarandas against iron-lace verandahs and the tower of Christ Church Cathedral behind, an 1884 building by John Horbury Hunt that used more than a hundred brick moulds and was only finished, fittingly, in 1934. The Regional Gallery occupies Prentice House, from 1880, and during the festival hangs the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award; Schaeffer House, 1900, holds the historical society. The river end of Prince Street reaches Memorial Park and the boulevard, with the view across to Susan Island's flying-fox colony and up to the 1932 Bendy Bridge.
The festival adds the markets, a stage programme in Market Square, food trucks, rides on Jacaranda Thursday, the fun run, a First Nations cultural day, the float parade on the final weekend and the crowning of the Jacaranda Queen. It is a community festival first and a visitor attraction second, which is why it has lasted ninety-two years and why it is worth the coach.
Photographing the trees
Jacaranda purple is a difficult colour for cameras. Hard midday sun turns it grey-blue; overcast light and the hour after dawn and before dusk saturate it. The coach arrives close to midday, so the guided loop is timed with two photo stops in shaded streets, and the best free-time shots are along a street, so that the two rows converge, rather than across it. Get low so the purple road fills the frame. The coach windows are tinted, so anything shot through them will need warming afterwards. Jacarandas closer to home
Sunshine Coast has its own purple season, usually a week or two ahead of Grafton's, in the jacarandas in the foreground of the Glass House Mountains view from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, the hinterland villages around Maleny and Montville, and the older streets of Nambour and Buderim. Who books this coach from the Sunshine Coast
People who have already decided they are not driving to Grafton. Garden club members from Buderim and the hinterland who know the tree from Mary Cairncross and want it at town scale. Retired couples from the Carnival of Flowers coach in September who asked what was next. Residents of the retirement communities from Caloundra to Noosa, who make up a good share of our Sunshine Coast passengers on every long day tour and for whom the early start is no hardship. A few photographers with a plan. It is a long day and the Sunshine Coast group know it going in, which makes them the easiest passengers on the route.
Making a weekend of it from the Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast is the region for which an overnight makes most sense, because it turns eleven hours of coach travel into two comfortable days. Drive down on Friday with a stop at Byron or Ballina, a night in Grafton, Yamba or Maclean, See Park lit at night, the avenue at first light, home Saturday. Accommodation books out months ahead for the festival. Cooee does not run an overnight Jacaranda package at present; a private charter for thirty or more can include one, from a Sunshine Coast pickup of your choosing. Frequently asked: why not fly?
There is no useful way to fly. Grafton's small airport has limited regional services, the XPT train stops in South Grafton once a day at times that suit multi-night stays, and Ballina airport is still ninety minutes from the trees. The coach from Maroochydore is, in practice, the only same-day option that does not involve you driving through Brisbane at dawn and back through it at dusk.
Fitness and mobility
An easy day by our standards, but it involves walking on old footpaths under the trees, grass and small bridges at See Park, and up to three hours on foot in a warm town. All scheduled Cooee departures require every passenger to board the coach unaided and walk unassisted on uneven ground; we do not provide personal assistance on tour. Wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility aids cannot be carried on scheduled departures and need a special vehicle arranged as a separate booking at additional cost. Please contact us before booking. Children are welcome, though the long coach day suits older children better than toddlers.

Weather and cancellations
Late spring in the Clarence Valley: 27–30°C, strong sun, afternoon storms possible. The tour runs in rain, which suits the flowers. We cancel only for severe weather warnings on the Pacific Highway, and then transfer you to another date or refund in full.
The daylight-saving catch
New South Wales moves its clocks forward on the first Sunday in October; Queensland does not. Every time on the festival programme is NSW time, an hour ahead of Sunshine Coast. On the coach it does not matter, because the driver-guide gives you the meeting time in local time and you are on board either way. If you drive yourself, it is the mistake that costs people the Jacaranda Thursday breakfast every year.
Groups from Sunshine Coast
Garden clubs, probus and seniors' groups, camera clubs and retirement villages make up a good share of this coach. Ten or more travelling together can be held as a block; thirty or more usually suits a dedicated coach from a pickup of your choosing anywhere in Sunshine Coast, on a date of your choosing, with the itinerary adjusted, and an overnight at Yamba or Maclean if you want See Park lit at night. How the shared coach works in practice
A word on the arrangement, because people ask. Cooee runs one Jacaranda coach a day by default, and it starts on the Sunshine Coast and finishes on the Gold Coast so that all three regions can travel on days when none of them would fill a coach alone. The consequence is that the route has five stops and the day is long at the northern end, but it is also the reason the tour exists at all on a Tuesday in the first week: with three regions on one bus, we can run it. Bookings from all three regions go into the same seat pool, so a departure that shows as available in Sunshine Coast is available for everyone, and when a day fills we add a second coach and shorten the route, which usually means Sunshine Coast and Brisbane on one and the Gold Coast on the other. Your booking email is the source of truth for your coach, your stop and your time; if it changes, we ring.
The season in one line
Grafton's jacarandas usually colour from the second half of October, peak from the last week of October into the first week of November, and are mostly on the ground by mid-November. The festival is scheduled for the peak. A warm spring brings it forward and a wet one holds it back, and we watch the season reports from the Clarence Valley from mid-October; ring us in the week before you travel if you want our read on the trees.
