The Encounter Coast
If the Fleurieu has a seaside heart, it’s the Encounter Coast — the run of shoreline linking Victor Harbor, Port Elliot and Goolwa. Named for the 1802 meeting of the explorers Flinders and Baudin, it packs granite headlands, a causeway island, safe swimming coves, a heritage railway and a winter parade of whales into a short and walkable stretch. It’s the classic Fleurieu coastal day out.
Along the Coast
Victor Harbor
Cross the causeway to Granite Island on foot or by heritage horse tram, walk The Bluff and, in winter, watch for whales. The Whale Centre keeps a sightings line.
Port Elliot
A historic town wrapped around Horseshoe Bay, one of the prettiest, safest swimming coves on the coast, with cafés and galleries.
Goolwa
The paddle-steamer port near the Murray Mouth, gateway to the Coorong and the eastern end of the Cockle Train line.
