How to Reach the Fleurieu Peninsula
Few great regions are as easy to reach as the Fleurieu. It begins barely half an hour south of Adelaide and unfolds gently toward the coast, so you can be swirling Shiraz in McLaren Vale within 45 minutes of the city, or standing on a whale-watching headland inside 90. Almost everyone arrives by car, and once here the short distances between wine, beaches and coastal towns make it a joy to explore.

South via the Southern Expressway and Main South Road — the quickest run, straight into wine country.
To Victor Harbor
On to the Encounter Coast, often via the rolling country around Mount Compass.

The river port at the Murray Mouth, at the eastern end of the Encounter Coast.

How far is the Fleurieu Peninsula from Adelaide?
It’s right on Adelaide’s doorstep. McLaren Vale is about 45 minutes (around 40 km) via the Southern Expressway and Main South Road; Victor Harbor and the Encounter Coast about 1.5 hours (around 85 km); and Cape Jervis about 1.5 hours (around 105 km) at the far south-western tip.
What is the best way to get to the Fleurieu?
By car — it’s the easiest way to link cellar doors, beaches and coastal towns at your own pace, and distances between highlights are short. Alternatively, a guided tour from Adelaide handles the driving and bookings.
Can I get to the Fleurieu without a car?
It’s possible but limiting — regional bus services reach some coastal towns, but the cellar doors, beaches and national park are spread out. A hire car, a private driver or a guided tour is far more practical for seeing the region.
