🏝️ Granite Island & the Horse-Drawn Tram
The Victor Harbor Horse-Drawn Tram is one of the most distinctive transport experiences in Australia. Since 1894, Clydesdale horses have been pulling heritage tram carriages across the wooden causeway to Granite Island — a service that has operated continuously for over 130 years, making it one of the oldest still-running horse-drawn trams in the world. Today it remains the only regularly operating horse-drawn tram in the Southern Hemisphere. Tickets are purchased at the causeway entrance. Note that the tram does not operate in strong winds — check ahead on blustery days.
Granite Island itself is a small rocky outcrop surrounded by the waters of Encounter Bay. The 2km Kaiki Walk loops around the island on a well-maintained track, offering dramatic views of the rugged coastline, the Southern Ocean, and (in season) whales in the bay below. Granite Island Lighthouse is a popular photography stop. Long-nosed fur seals rest on the rocky outcrops on the northern side of the island, particularly visible in the morning.

Encounter Bay at Victor Harbor is one of Australia's premier land-based whale watching destinations. Southern Right Whales visit these waters each winter during their annual migration from sub-Antarctic feeding grounds — the warm, sheltered waters of Encounter Bay provide ideal conditions for mothers to rest and nurse their calves. Humpback Whales are also occasionally seen during migration. At the peak of the season (July–August), multiple whales can sometimes be visible simultaneously from shore.

Best Land-Based Viewing Spots
- The Bluff (Rosetta Head)The headland at the western end of Encounter Bay provides elevated views over the entire bay — one of the best land-based whale watching spots in South Australia. The walk to the top takes about 20 minutes and is well worth the effort during whale season.
- Granite Island Whale LookoutThe western cliffs of Granite Island offer close viewing during winter migration. Whales sometimes pass within metres of the island's rocky shore.
- Victor Harbor Waterfront EsplanadeThe town's waterfront provides good viewing along the entire arc of Encounter Bay. Binoculars are useful but not essential — southern right whales are large and their blows are clearly visible from shore.
- Big Duck Boat ToursDaily boat tours from the Causeway for closer whale encounters during season, plus dolphins and seals year-round. Bookings recommended in peak whale season.
🏛️ South Australian Whale Centre
The SA Whale Centre at Warland Reserve is one of the finest marine interpretive centres in Australia. Three floors of interactive exhibits explore the natural history of whales, the history of the South Australian whaling industry (Victor Harbor was once a significant whaling port), the biology and behaviour of southern right whales, and current conservation efforts. Whale sightings are sometimes logged and updated at the centre — it's a good first stop during whale season to find out where whales have been spotted that day. The centre is adjacent to Warland Reserve, a beautiful waterfront park.
🚴 Encounter Bikeway
The Encounter Bikeway is a 22km shared cycling and walking path that follows the coastline of the Fleurieu Peninsula between Victor Harbor and Goolwa — passing beaches, coastal lookouts, small towns, and excellent whale watching vantage points along the way. The path is mostly flat and suitable for cyclists of all abilities. Bike hire is available in Victor Harbor and several accommodation properties along the route also provide bicycles. The scenery is exceptional: dramatic cliff sections, quiet estuaries, and the constant presence of the Southern Ocean.

Goolwa — Historic River Port
The Encounter Bikeway or Cockle Train connect Victor Harbor to Goolwa — a historic paddle steamer port at the mouth of the Murray River. The Cockle Train is a heritage steam railway that operates on special event days between Victor Harbor and Goolwa, passing through Port Elliot. Goolwa is known for good seafood, heritage buildings, and the unique environment where Australia's largest river meets the sea at the Coorong. Worth combining with a Victor Harbor day.
Port Elliot
A charming small coastal town between Victor Harbor and Goolwa — excellent surf beaches (Horseshoe Bay has surf breaks), heritage buildings, good cafes, and a relaxed atmosphere. Often visited as part of the Bikeway journey or the Cockle Train route.
Connection to Kangaroo Island
Victor Harbor sits approximately 30 minutes north of Cape Jervis — the departure point for the SeaLink ferry to Kangaroo Island. The horse-drawn tram does not operate in strong winds. If visiting on a forecast windy day, call the tram office on (08) 8551 0720 before leaving Adelaide to check if services are running. The causeway walk (foot only) is always available when the tram is not. Pets and bicycles are not permitted on the causeway or Granite Island.
