🗺️ Brisbane Neighbourhood Guide for Visitors
Brisbane is a compact, riverside city — the right neighbourhood makes a genuine difference to your daily convenience. Here's how each area suits Cooee Tours guests:
Brisbane's cultural heart — the South Bank Parklands, Streets Beach (the world's only inner-city man-made beach), QAGOMA art gallery, Queensland Museum, and the Performing Arts Centre are all within minutes. A 10-minute walk across the river brings you into the CBD. Rich restaurant and bar scene; beautiful for morning riverwalks.
Best for: First-timers, families, cultural tourism, luxury staysMaximum transport connections, the widest choice of accommodation types, and walking distance to all major tour departure points. Queen Street Mall, the City Botanic Gardens, and Howard Smith Wharves dining are all here. The free City Loop bus and CityHopper ferry connect easily to other neighbourhoods.
Best for: Tour guests, business travellers, first-time visitorsAustralia's first designated entertainment precinct — live music, excellent multicultural restaurants, and designer boutiques along James Street. Best for: Couples, photographers, guests with a vehicleBrisbane's most stylish inner suburb — James Street boutiques, weekend markets, the Brisbane Powerhouse arts venue, and New Farm Park along the river. Boutique hotels and B&Bs rather than large chains. A genuine neighbourhood feel. CityHopper ferry to the CBD takes 10 minutes. Excellent for longer stays.
Best for: Repeat visitors, longer stays, cafe culture loversBrisbane Accommodation Tiers — What to Expect by Budget
Well-located hostels near Central Station, budget motels in Spring Hill and Kangaroo Point, and serviced studios in the CBD. Ibis Styles and similar branded budget hotels for reliably clean, central options.
The widest selection. Self-contained apartments in the CBD offer excellent value for families and longer stays. Novotel South Bank is a strong mid-range choice with pool and breakfast options.
W Brisbane (river views, three restaurants), Crystalbrook Vincent at Howard Smith Wharves, Emporium Hotel South Bank (infinity pool), and The Star Grand Brisbane at Queen's Wharf for a full resort experience.
Brisbane offers two free public transport services: the City Loop bus (routes 40 and 50) circles the CBD throughout the day, and the CityHopper ferry runs free along the Brisbane River between North Quay, South Bank, Kangaroo Point, and New Farm Park. Both operate 7 days a week and are ideal for Cooee Tours guests reaching CBD departure points from South Bank or Kangaroo Point accommodation.
🌊 Gold Coast Areas for Tour Guests
If you're departing from our Gold Coast pickup points for Byron Bay, the hinterland, or Tamborine Mountain tours, here's where to base yourself:
The beating heart of the Gold Coast — beachfront high-rises, the widest selection of accommodation, and direct G:link light rail access. Most Cooee Tours Gold Coast pickup points are easily accessible from here. Iconic beach strip, SkyPoint Observation Deck, and Infinity entertainment. Lively and busy year-round.
Best for: Beach holidays, couples, families, most tour guestsA calmer alternative to Surfers Paradise, just 3km south. The dining strip along Victoria Avenue has Gold Coast's best restaurants. Pacific Fair shopping centre, Jupiter's Casino, and easy G:link access to Surfers Paradise in 10 minutes. Feels more grown-up and residential than Surfers Paradise.
Best for: Couples, food lovers, those wanting a quieter baseThe original Gold Coast city centre — more affordable than the beachfront strip with good transit connections. Home to the Gold Coast University Hospital and city parklands along the Broadwater. G:link access to Surfers Paradise in 15 minutes. Good for budget-conscious travellers who want the Gold Coast experience without beachfront prices.
Best for: Budget travellers, longer stays, medical tourism💡 Booking Tips for Cooee Tours Guests
- ✓Book accommodation when you book your tour. Don't separate these decisions — your accommodation choice should directly reflect your tour departure location and time. Once your tour is confirmed, book the most convenient accommodation first.
- ✓Mention your Cooee Tours booking at every partner hotel. This is essential to access the exclusive guest rates, early check-in priority, and complimentary luggage storage that partner hotels have agreed to provide for our guests.
- ✓Book 2–3 months ahead for December to February and school holidays. Brisbane and Gold Coast accommodation fills quickly during Queensland school holidays (April, July, September–October, December–January). Partner rates are capacity-controlled and may not be available on short notice.
- ✓Confirm early check-in requirements directly with the hotel. If your tour departs at 7am or earlier, most partner hotels can arrange early check-in the night before if you're arriving late the previous evening. Confirm this when reserving.
- ✓All partner hotels provide secure luggage storage. If you're checking out before your tour returns, simply leave your bags at the front desk. This is a standard service across all our partner properties at no charge for tour guests.
- ✓Consider self-contained apartments for families and multi-night stays. Properties with kitchen facilities allow you to manage meal costs — particularly useful for families where dining out three times a day adds up significantly over a multi-day trip.
- ✓Contact us if you need accommodation advice tailored to your tour. Our Brisbane team knows the exact meeting points, typical departure times, and nearest accommodation options for every tour in our programme. A 5-minute call can save you a lot of research.
🏙️ More Brisbane Neighbourhoods Worth Knowing
Beyond the CBD and South Bank, Brisbane has several additional neighbourhoods that suit specific types of travellers. Here's what the growing areas offer Cooee Tours guests:
West End — Brisbane's Creative Neighbourhood
Just west of South Bank across Musgrave Park, West End is Brisbane's most eclectic inner suburb — a dense strip of independent cafes, multicultural restaurants, vintage shops, and street art along Boundary Street and Hardgrave Road. It has a strong creative and community character that feels genuinely different from the tourist-polished South Bank. Boundary Street Markets (weekends) draw local crowds for Vietnamese bánh mì, Ethiopian injera, and specialty coffee. West End is 20–25 minutes walk from the CBD or a short bus ride on the 60/169 routes. Boutique B&Bs and serviced apartments are the primary accommodation type — large hotels haven't yet colonised the neighbourhood, which many guests see as a positive. For Cooee Tours guests who want to experience local Brisbane culture rather than tourist-zone dining, West End is an excellent base for longer stays.
Spring Hill — Best Value Near the CBD
Spring Hill sits immediately north of the CBD — close enough to walk to most tour departure points (10–15 minutes), but priced 20–35% cheaper than comparable CBD accommodation. It's a residential hill suburb with a mix of heritage terrace houses, modern apartments, and well-priced motels. The key advantage is walkability: the CBD, Roma Street Station (direct airport train connection), and Suncorp Stadium are all easily accessible. Several good mid-range and budget hotels are clustered near Roma Street, making Spring Hill the most practical area for Cooee Tours guests who want central convenience without CBD pricing. The Roma Street Parkland — 16 hectares of ornamental gardens, grottoes, and rainforest — is Spring Hill's secret highlight, particularly good for early-morning walks before tour departure.
Howard Smith Wharves — Brisbane's Most Impressive New Precinct
At the base of the Story Bridge on the northern riverbank, the Howard Smith Wharves precinct is Brisbane's most exciting recent development — heritage timber wharves converted into a cluster of restaurants, bars, an oyster house, rooftop venues, and the boutique Crystalbrook Vincent hotel. The setting is spectacular: the wharves sit directly under the Story Bridge with Story Bridge Adventure Climb visible overhead, and the Brisbane River lapping metres away. Staying at Crystalbrook Vincent puts you in one of Brisbane's most Instagram-worthy locations, with a rooftop pool and access to some of the city's best dining (Joe's Oyster Bar, Felons Brewing Co, Greca restaurant). It's a 15-minute walk or 5-minute CityHopper ferry to the CBD. A premium-priced area, but genuinely extraordinary for a special occasion or luxury Brisbane stay.
Brisbane Airport Area — For Late Arrivals and Early Departures
If you're flying into Brisbane late on the night before your Cooee Tour, or have an early-morning departure at the end of your trip, the Brisbane Airport area has two good options. The Pullman Brisbane Airport is connected directly to the terminals by covered walkway — no transport needed and no risk of missing early transfers. Rates average $200–$280/night. The ibis Brisbane Airport provides a more budget-conscious option ($120–$170/night) with a complimentary airport shuttle that runs until midnight. Both hotels have all-day dining for arriving guests at any hour. For Cooee Tours guests: if your tour departs from central Brisbane (not the airport), it's worth factoring in the 30-minute airtrain journey from the airport to the CBD the following morning, which costs AUD $19.60 single. An airport hotel is a good choice for one night, then relocate to a CBD or South Bank property for your main stay.
Parking costs in Brisbane vary significantly by area. CBD car parks: $25–$55/day (Wilson Parking app finds cheaper hourly options in fringe streets). South Bank: $20–$35/day in the South Bank Car Park. Kangaroo Point: free street parking in residential streets with 4-hour limits; evening and weekend free zones expand. Spring Hill and West End: free or low-cost street parking available on most streets (check time restrictions). New Farm: easy weekend parking; metered on weekdays. All partner hotels offer car parking; confirm the daily rate at booking — CBD partner hotel parking is typically $25–$40/day.
🏖️ More Gold Coast Areas: Burleigh Heads, Main Beach & Beyond
The Gold Coast stretches 57km of coastline from South Stradbroke Island in the north to Coolangatta on the NSW border. While Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach serve Cooee Tours guests well for tour departures, two additional areas are worth considering for a longer Gold Coast stay:
Burleigh Heads — The Gold Coast's Best-Kept Secret
Once the undiscovered cousin of Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads has rapidly emerged as the Gold Coast's most sought-after neighbourhood — a blend of surf culture, boutique dining, and the extraordinary Burleigh Heads National Park. James Street is the heart of it: lined with specialty coffee roasters, plant-based brunch spots, Japanese sushi omakase counters, and natural wine bars that wouldn't be out of place in New York or Tokyo. The beach itself is spectacular — a crescent of golden sand with a headland at the southern end that creates a surf break celebrated internationally. The national park trails wind through coastal rainforest with the best headland views on the Gold Coast. Accommodation in Burleigh Heads leans toward boutique apartments and small-scale resorts rather than the 80-storey towers of Surfers — the scale is human and the atmosphere is noticeably calmer. For Cooee Tours guests, Burleigh Heads adds 15–20 minutes travel time to most Gold Coast tour departure points, which is worth it for guests staying 3+ nights who want the best version of the Gold Coast experience. The Mondrian Gold Coast (opened 2024) brought international luxury credentials to the area.
Main Beach — Quiet Luxury Near Sea World
Main Beach sits just north of Surfers Paradise — close enough to reach the Surfers strip in minutes, but significantly quieter in character. It's particularly well-suited for families visiting Gold Coast theme parks, as Sea World is walking distance and the other parks (Movie World, Dreamworld, Wet n Wild) are a 20–25 minute drive north via the M1. The accommodation in Main Beach leans toward upmarket resort-style properties: The Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort sits right on the beach with a channel-fed saltwater lagoon pool, and the Sea World Resort gives families the option of waterpark and theme park combo access from their doorstep. For Cooee Tours guests departing from the southern Gold Coast (Surfers/Broadbeach pickup points), Main Beach adds 10–15 minutes to the commute but provides a superior family resort environment.
Coolangatta — For Surf Enthusiasts and Beach Purists
At the southernmost tip of the Gold Coast, right on the Queensland/New South Wales border, Coolangatta (locals say "Coolangatta/Tweed Heads" as the towns blend together) is the Gold Coast for people who are slightly over the Gold Coast. The surf breaks at Snapper Rocks, Kirra Beach, and Greenmount are world-class — Snapper hosts the professional Quiksilver Pro surfing event. The atmosphere is low-key, the restaurants are good, and accommodation is excellent value compared to Surfers Paradise. The Coolangatta/Gold Coast Airport is 4 minutes away by taxi — ideal for flying in and starting a Gold Coast stay immediately. Drawback for Cooee Tours guests: it's 25–35 minutes from most tour departure points in Surfers Paradise, so consider whether that travel time is justified for your stay length.
The Gold Coast G:link light rail extension is expected to reach Burleigh Heads by late 2026, adding Mermaid Beach, Miami, and Burleigh Heads stops to the existing Helensvale–Broadbeach network. This will significantly improve accessibility for guests staying in Burleigh Heads and Mermaid Beach for tour departure connections. Until the extension opens, guests in these southern areas should allow an additional 15–20 minutes and consider rideshare to Surfers Paradise for tour pickups. Check the TransLink website for the latest G:link timetable and extension progress.
🌺 Sunshine Coast Accommodation Guide
The Sunshine Coast — stretching 60km from Caloundra in the south to Noosa Heads in the north — is one of Queensland's most diverse travel regions. Warm subtropical climate year-round, world-class surf beaches, a celebrated hinterland of rainforest villages and artisan producers, and one of Australia's most sophisticated dining and wellness scenes make it a natural extension of any South-East Queensland itinerary. Whether you're joining a Cooee Tours Sunshine Coast day tour from Brisbane or building independent days around it, here's where to stay.
Most Cooee Tours Sunshine Coast day tours (Glass House Mountains, Australia Zoo, Noosa, Blackall Range) depart from Brisbane CBD pickup points. If you're staying on the Sunshine Coast and joining one of these tours, check your tour confirmation for whether a Sunshine Coast pickup option is available. If not, you'll need to allow approximately 1 hour travel time to Brisbane CBD by car (M1 motorway) or the Sunbus/Greyhound coach. Alternatively, consider basing yourself in Brisbane for tour days and doing 2–3 independent days on the Sunshine Coast before or after.
The Sunshine Coast's most celebrated destination — Hastings Street is a 300-metre strip of boutique hotels, resort apartments, designer boutiques, and some of Queensland's finest restaurants. Noosa Main Beach faces north (unusual for the east coast) giving it calm, protected surf conditions year-round. Noosa National Park begins at the eastern end of Hastings Street: 4km of coastal rainforest trail with koala sightings, headland views, and Granite Bay — one of Queensland's most scenic beaches. Accommodation is predominantly boutique resorts, self-contained apartments, and luxury B&Bs rather than large hotel chains. Noosa is consistently the most expensive area on the Sunshine Coast; expect to pay 30–60% more than equivalent accommodation in Mooloolaba or Caloundra. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for Christmas/January and school holiday periods.
Best for: Luxury stays, couples, foodies, long weekends, repeat visitorsThe Sunshine Coast's most visitor-friendly area — Mooloolaba Beach is patrolled year-round (critical for families), the esplanade is flat and walkable with ice cream shops, restaurants, and cafes in easy reach, and the SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium provides a half-day indoor activity for days of unpredictable weather. The Wharf Mooloolaba precinct has excellent fish and chips, waterfront dining, and whale watching boats operating June–October. Accommodation ranges from budget motels on the back streets to beachfront resort apartments on the Esplanade. Mooloolaba sits roughly in the middle of the Sunshine Coast strip, making day drives north to Noosa (45 minutes) or south to Caloundra (30 minutes) easy. It's also the closest area to the Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) — approximately 15 minutes by taxi.
Best for: Families, first-timers, couples, anyone wanting the full SC experienceThe southernmost major town on the Sunshine Coast — and the most affordable. Caloundra has nine beaches of genuinely different character: Kings Beach faces the open ocean for surf; Bulcock Beach is sheltered and esplanade-lined; Pumicestone Passage (the channel between Caloundra and Bribie Island) offers the calmest possible water for small children and nervous swimmers. The atmosphere is relaxed and residential rather than tourist-driven. Accommodation is mostly mid-range apartment resorts and motels clustered around Kings Beach. The key advantage for Cooee Tours guests: Caloundra is the closest Sunshine Coast point to Brisbane (approximately 85km, 1 hour), making it the most practical base if you need to commute to a Brisbane tour departure. The Sunshine Motorway and Bruce Highway direct connection makes it a straightforward drive.
Best for: Families with young children, budget travellers, those commuting to Brisbane toursThe commercial and administrative centre of the Sunshine Coast — more urban in character than the resort towns but the most practical base for accessing the whole region. Maroochydore is 10 minutes from the Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY), 20 minutes from Noosa, 10 minutes from Mooloolaba, and 35 minutes from Caloundra — putting you at the centre of everything without committing to one end of the strip. The new Maroochydore City Centre development (ongoing since 2019) is transforming the town centre with contemporary retail, dining, and accommodation. Cotton Tree (beach suburb of Maroochydore) has excellent beachfront apartments with a more relaxed atmosphere than the commercial centre. For Cooee Tours guests arriving by air, Maroochydore provides the fastest airport-to-accommodation connection on the Sunshine Coast.
Best for: Fly-in guests, road trippers exploring the full coast, business travellersThe Blackall Range hinterland towns of Montville and Maleny sit 400–500m above sea level with panoramic views over the Sunshine Coast and Glass House Mountains. These are small, characterful villages with galleries, artisan food producers, farmhouse B&Bs, and boutique retreats — a completely different experience from the coastal strip. Montville has a European village aesthetic with day-spa retreats, cedar-lined walking tracks, and cliff-edge restaurants. Maleny is more agricultural and community-oriented, with a weekly market, craft brewery, and the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve — 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest with a free ecotourist centre and excellent Glass House Mountains views. If you're joining a Cooee Nature tour through the hinterland, staying in Montville or Maleny puts you directly in the landscape your tour explores.
Best for: Couples, nature lovers, spa retreats, Cooee Nature tour guestsSunshine Coast Accommodation Tiers — What to Expect by Budget
Best found in Caloundra (back-street motels and apartment complexes away from the beachfront) and Maroochydore (city-centre hotels). Mooloolaba has budget hostels near the beach. Avoid peak school holidays for these rates — they spike significantly.
The widest selection is in Mooloolaba and Caloundra. Self-contained 1–2 bedroom apartments with pool and kitchen are the standard mid-range product on the Sunshine Coast — excellent value for families who self-cater some meals. Noosa mid-range starts higher (~$200+).
Noosa concentrates the luxury options: Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas, Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort, and the private-house rental market on Noosa Hill and Sunshine Beach. Hinterland retreats (Spicers Hidden Vale, Flaxton Gardens) offer destination-level luxury in the Blackall Range.
Getting to the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane
The Sunshine Coast is 90–110km from Brisbane CBD depending on your destination. The primary options for Cooee Tours guests:
- 🚗Drive via Bruce Highway (M1): 1hr–1hr 20min depending on destination. Fastest and most flexible option. Toll road (Sunshine Motorway toll section) costs approximately $5–8 each way. Park free in most Sunshine Coast beach suburbs. Best option for guests with a hire car.
- ✈️Fly into Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY): Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and New Zealand. Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and Rex operate routes. Approximately 15–20 minutes from Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. A practical option if starting the Sunshine Coast as your first Queensland stop before heading to Brisbane.
- 🚌Greyhound or Premier Coach: Daily coaches from Brisbane Transit Centre to Maroochydore and Noosa. Journey time approximately 2–2.5 hours to Noosa. Budget-friendly ($25–$45 each way) but less flexible for day-trip scheduling. Best for travellers without hire cars doing a multi-day stay.
- 🚆TransLink Bus (Route 600/700 series): Public transport connection from Beerwah train station (on the Brisbane Airport Rail link) to Caloundra and Mooloolaba. Slower than driving but fully integrated with the SEQ public transport network and covered by a Go Card. Not practical for early morning tour departures from Brisbane.
The most popular multi-destination approach: spend 2–3 nights in Brisbane (for your Cooee Tour day and city exploration), then drive or coach up to the Sunshine Coast for 2–3 nights independently. This gives you the tour day plus genuine time to explore Noosa National Park, the Glass House Mountains, or the hinterland at your own pace. Return to Brisbane for your outbound flight, or continue north to Hervey Bay and Fraser Island if time allows.
🚌 Getting to Cooee Tours Departure Points
The most practical question for Cooee Tours guests when choosing accommodation isn't "what's the nicest hotel?" — it's "how do I get to my pickup point on time, without stress, at 7:30am?" Here's exactly how to plan that.
Brisbane Tour Departure Points — Transport Options
Most Cooee Tours Brisbane departures use two primary pickup zones: the Queen Street Mall / King George Square area in the CBD heart, and the South Bank Parklands coach bay on Grey Street. Your specific tour confirmation will detail the exact address. Both pickup zones are accessible by:
- 🚗Taxi/Uber from CBD or South Bank accommodation: 3–8 minutes, AUD $10–$18. Most reliable option for 7am or earlier departures when public transport frequency is reduced. Book Uber the night before for guaranteed availability.
- 🚶Walking from CBD accommodation: Most CBD hotels are within 10–15 minutes walk of the Queen Street Mall departure zone. Check Google Maps from your specific hotel on arrival. Walking is the most stress-free option in good weather.
- ⛴️CityHopper ferry from South Bank, Kangaroo Point, or New Farm: Free, direct, and pleasant. The South Bank Wharf to North Quay (near Queen Street) crossing takes 8 minutes and runs from 6am. Our recommended option for guests staying in South Bank.
- 🚌City Loop Bus (Routes 40 and 50): Free loop around the CBD, including stops near King George Square. Not reliable for very early departures (service typically starts 7am weekdays, 8am weekends).
- 🚆Train from Spring Hill (Roma Street Station): Direct to Central Station (adjacent to Queen Street Mall) in 4 minutes, first train from Roma Street at 5:30am weekdays. Ideal for Spring Hill guests.
Gold Coast Tour Departure Points — Transport Options
Cooee Tours Gold Coast departures typically use pickup zones in the Surfers Paradise Transit Centre area on Cypress Avenue or designated coach bays on the esplanade. For guests staying in Broadbeach or Southport, the G:link light rail to the Surfers Paradise 1 stop (Cavill Avenue) takes 7–12 minutes. Guests at our partner Oceanview Resort Surfers Paradise enjoy the advantage of door pickup — no transit required.
We recommend planning to be at the departure point 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. Most Cooee Tours depart within a 10-minute window of the scheduled time. If you're unsure about the exact pickup location, contact us the afternoon before your tour — our Brisbane team is available on 0409 661 342 or contact@cooeetours.com.au until 6pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends.
🗺️ Matching Your Accommodation to Your Tour
Different Cooee Tours have different ideal accommodation bases. Here's how to match your hotel choice to the specific tour you've booked:
Tours departing from the Gold Coast for Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook, or Lamington National Park. Partner Oceanview Resort offers door pickup — the easiest option. Broadbeach also works well via G:link to Surfers.
Byron Bay tours depart from both Brisbane (CBD zone) and the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise). Choose whichever city you're already based in. Travel time to Byron Bay is approximately 2 hours from Brisbane, 1.5 hours from the Gold Coast.
Sunshine Coast tours (Noosa, Glass House Mountains, Australia Zoo) depart exclusively from Brisbane pickup zones. CBD or South Bank accommodation provides the most convenient access to these departure points.
Cooee's wine and winery tours (Scenic Rim, Granite Belt, Hunter Valley extension) depart from Brisbane CBD. You'll be returning to the same pickup zone, so choosing central CBD accommodation means less planning on return.
For tours involving overnight stays (Reef/Daintree combinations, Outback extensions), the hotel you book before and after the tour matters most. Brisbane CBD for pre-tour; partner hotels can store luggage for the duration of your tour.
Families benefit from South Bank's Streets Beach for downtime between tour days, and self-contained CBD apartments for cost-effective dining. Both areas are excellent for families with young children given walkable attractions.
📅 When to Book Brisbane & Gold Coast Accommodation
Accommodation pricing in Brisbane and the Gold Coast fluctuates more dramatically by date than in most Australian cities, because Queensland school holidays and major events create sharp demand spikes. Planning your booking timing correctly can save 30–50% on accommodation costs.
🌞 Summer Peak (Dec–Jan)
Highest prices of the year. Book 3–4 months ahead for Gold Coast beachfront. Brisbane CBD is slightly less affected (many interstate families head to the coast). School holidays Dec 19–Jan 27 2027 drive Gold Coast prices up 40–80% for beachfront hotels.
Book: 3–4 months ahead minimum🍂 Autumn Value (Mar–May)
Best value window for Brisbane accommodation. Post-summer rates drop 20–35%. Easter long weekend (book 6 weeks ahead for the Gold Coast) is the only spike. April school holidays (roughly Apr 3–17 for QLD 2026) push Gold Coast prices briefly. May is outstanding value — book 3–4 weeks ahead.
Book: 3–6 weeks ahead (except Easter)❄️ Winter (Jun–Aug)
Cheapest time for Brisbane CBD. Gold Coast winter (Jun–Aug) is actually mid-season — popular for domestic travellers escaping southern Australia's cold, so beachfront prices don't drop as much as CBD. July school holidays (Jun 27–Jul 17 for QLD) spike both cities.
Book: 4–8 weeks ahead🌸 Spring (Sep–Nov)
Excellent conditions with moderate pricing — spring school holidays (Sep 19–Oct 5 for QLD 2026) cause a brief spike on the Gold Coast. October through mid-November is a sweet spot: warm, uncrowded, good availability, and partner hotel rates often available without advance booking pressure.
Book: 3–6 weeks ahead (except Sep holidays)Major Events That Affect Brisbane & Gold Coast Hotel Availability
These events regularly cause accommodation to sell out weeks or months in advance. If your tour dates overlap with any of these, prioritise accommodation booking immediately:
- 🏆Brisbane Ekka (Royal Queensland Show): Mid-August, 10 days. Public holiday in Brisbane. CBD and inner Brisbane hotels book quickly, particularly for the Friday show public holiday. Book 4–6 weeks ahead.
- 🏆Gold Coast 600 (V8 Supercars): October long weekend. Surfers Paradise street circuit race. Hotels within 2km of Surfers Paradise sell out months ahead. Book 3+ months ahead if visiting during this weekend.
- 🏆Splendour in the Grass (Byron Bay, August): While not in Brisbane or Gold Coast, this major music festival near Byron Bay causes South-East QLD accommodation to tighten significantly as festival attendees fill nearby hotels.
- 🏆Riverfire (Brisbane, September): The annual riverfire fireworks spectacular from the Story Bridge. Howard Smith Wharves and Kangaroo Point accommodation sells out 4–8 weeks ahead. South Bank riverfront rooms go first.
- 🏆Schoolies Week (Gold Coast, late November): Year 12 graduation celebrations flood Surfers Paradise. Book well ahead or choose Broadbeach or Burleigh Heads accommodation, which are less affected by the event's atmosphere.
💡 Making the Most of Your Stay Beyond the Tour
Your Cooee Tour covers one extraordinary day. Here's how to make the most of the time before and after it, based on which city you're staying in:
Brisbane: Before Your Tour Day
Arriving in Brisbane the evening before your tour? The best use of that time depends on the area you're staying. Howard Smith Wharves for dinner and river views under the Story Bridge — Felons Brewing Co has excellent food and the setting is extraordinary at sunset. Fish Lane (South Brisbane) for some of Brisbane's most creative small bars and restaurants in a laneway behind the PAX precinct. The City Botanic Gardens for a riverside evening walk if you arrive early enough — the jacaranda trees along the main avenue bloom purple in October/November and are spectacular. The James Street precinct in Fortitude Valley for upscale boutique shopping and dinner if you're staying in that area.
Brisbane: After Your Tour Day
You'll return from your Cooee Tour in the late afternoon or early evening. A riverside dinner at one of the South Bank restaurants (Stokehouse or Longtime are both excellent) is a natural follow-on. For a post-tour experience, the Wheel of Brisbane at South Bank gives a bird's-eye view of the city at dusk. The Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) is free entry for the permanent collection and stays open until 5pm on weekdays. If your tour took you to the Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast hinterland, you'll return with a good appetite — Stanley Street Plaza in South Bank has excellent Asian options for a casual evening meal.
Gold Coast: Before & After Your Tour
The Gold Coast is essentially one long beach day. The morning before your tour, Surfers Paradise beach at dawn is genuinely beautiful before the crowds arrive — if your tour isn't a very early departure, a 6:30am beach walk pays dividends. Burleigh Heads National Park (20 minutes south) is the best short hike on the Gold Coast: a 3.5km coastal rainforest loop with outstanding headland views and reliable whale sightings June–October. After your tour returns, the dining strip on Broadbeach Mall has some of the Gold Coast's most reliable dining at all price points. The Star Gold Coast casino complex in Broadbeach offers free entertainment, people-watching, and multiple dining options if you want an evening without planning ahead.

What is the best area to stay in Brisbane for Cooee Tours guests?
Brisbane CBD is the most convenient for tour guests — most Cooee Tours pickup points are in the CBD or within a 5-minute taxi ride. You're walking distance from Queen Street Mall, City Botanic Gardens, and the Brisbane River, and connected to South Bank by the free CityHopper ferry.
South Bank t alternative with a more atmospheric riverside setting, better dining, and the South Bank Parklands — it's a 10-minute walk across the river to the CBD. Our partner Riverside Hotel Brisbane is located here.
What is the cheapest area to stay in Brisbane near tour departure points?
For budget accommodation near Brisbane tour departure points, Spring Hill (just north of the CBD) and Fortitude Valley offer the best value while remaining within 15 minutes of all meeting points. The CBD itself has budget-friendly options including Ibis Styles and several hostels near Central Station.
Self-contained apartments in the CBD often represent the best value for families and groups — kitchen facilities reduce dining costs significantly over a multi-night stay, and the per-person cost drops with multiple people sharing.
Do I need a car in Brisbane?
No — Brisbane's CBD and inner suburbs are walkable, and the city has good public transport including trains, buses, ferries, and the free CityHopper. For Cooee Tours guests, all tour pickups can be reached on foot or by a short Uber/taxi ride from CBD or South Bank accommodation.
If you're parking in central Brisbane, expect to pay $35–50 per day at most CBD car parks. Suburbs like Kangaroo Point and New Farm have more affordable parking options.
What is the free CityHopper ferry in Brisbane?
The CityHopper is a completely free ferry service running along the Brisbane River from approximately 6am to midnight, 7 days a week. It stops at North Quay (near the CBD), South Bank, Mater Hill, Kangaroo Point Cliffs, and New Farm Park — connecting the key inner-city areas at no cost.
For Cooee Tours guests staying in South Bank, Kangaroo Point, or New Farm, the CityHopper provides a convenient and scenic way to reach CBD departure points. The South Bank to CBD crossing takes approximately 8 minutes.
Where should I stay on the Gold Coast for Cooee Tours?
Surfers Paradise is the most convenient base for Gold Coast tour departures — it's the centre of the Gold Coast hotel strip with the widest range of accommodation options. Our partner Oceanview Resort offers tour pickup directly at the hotel.
Broadbeach (3km south of Surfers Paradise) is a calmer alternative with Gold Coast's best dining scene and easy G:link light rail access to tour meeting points.
Can I store my luggage at a partner hotel on tour day?
Yes — all Cooee Tours partner hotels provide complimentary secure luggage storage for tour guests. If you're checking out on the morning of your tour, simply drop your bags at the front desk before departure and collect them on your return. This service is at no charge to all guests who book through the Cooee Tours partner rate.
What is the best Brisbane accommodation option for families?
For families visiting Brisbane on a Cooee Tour, self-contained CBD apartments represent the best combination of convenience, space, and value. Properties like Brisbane Central Apartments (our partner hotel) offer full kitchen facilities, laundry, and separate sleeping areas — essential for families with young children. Full kitchens allow you to prepare breakfasts and some dinners, significantly reducing the cost of dining out three times a day over a multi-night stay.
South Bank is the best neighbourhood for family stays: Streets Beach (the inner-city man-made beach) is immediately accessible for kids after a long tour day, and the Queensland Museum and Scienceworks are walking distance. Most South Bank accommodation has rooftop pools. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for family rooms in peak school holiday periods.
Is the Gold Coast worth staying longer than just a day tour?
Absolutely — and most visitors who add a 2–3 night Gold Coast extension to their Queensland trip consider it one of the best decisions of the trip. The Gold Coast offers more than the beach strip: the hinterland (Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook, Lamington National Park) is extraordinary bushwalking country an hour from the coast; Australia's biggest theme parks (Movie World, Dreamworld, Sea World) are 30–40 minutes north; and the dining scene in Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads competes with Brisbane's best restaurants. A 3-night stay gives you time for a Cooee Tour day, a hinterland or theme park day, and a proper beach/dining day. Broadbeach is our recommended base for a multi-night Gold Coast stay — calmer than Surfers Paradise, with better dining, and G:link rail access for easy connections to tour departure points.
