Driving to Rotorua
Driving is the most popular way. From Auckland it's about 230 km (3 hours) south on good highways, passing near Hobbiton (Matamata) — a natural stop. Taupō is an hour south, Tauranga an hour north on the coast, and Waitomo around 1.5 hours west. A car gives you the freedom to reach the spread-out thermal parks and day trips. Flights & coaches
Short on time or coming from the South Island? Rotorua Airport (ROT), minutes east of town, has regular domestic flights — chiefly Air New Zealand — from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, with rental cars on site.
