Flying into Wellington
Wellington Airport has direct trans-Tasman flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane (around 3–3.5 hours) and is a busy domestic hub. Famous for its short runway between harbour and strait, it delivers a dramatic arrival — and it's only 15 minutes from the centre, with an Airport Express bus, taxis, rideshare and car hire. The Cook Strait ferry & the train
Wellington is the North Island end of the Cook Strait ferry — a scenic 3–3.5 hour crossing to Picton through the Marlborough Sounds (Interislander and Bluebridge), carrying vehicles, and the natural link for a both-island tour. Which way suits you?
Flying is quickest and lands you minutes from the centre — no car needed for the city. The ferry is ideal if you're continuing to (or arriving from) the South Island with a vehicle, and the Northern Explorer makes a scenic North Island leg.
