Getting around Christchurch
Christchurch is flat, compact and easy to get around. The central city is a pleasure on foot or by bike — it's one of New Zealand's most cycle-friendly cities — while Metro buses cover the suburbs and a heritage tram loops the sights. A hire car earns its keep for the day trips. Here's how to move around with ease.
Walk, cycle & the tram
The rebuilt central city is flat and walkable, and superb for cycling thanks to extensive cycleways (grab an e-bike). The historic tram runs a scenic hop-on hop-off loop past Cathedral Square, New Regent Street and the Avon — great for sightseeing (though not everyday transport). E-scooters and taxis are everywhere. Metro buses & hiring a car
The Metro bus network covers the suburbs on a low flat fare from the central Bus Interchange — enough for getting around town and out to the wildlife parks or beaches. For day trips — Akaroa, the Waipara wineries, Hanmer Springs, Kaikōura — a hire car gives freedom, or a guided tour takes the driving off your hands. Pick the mix that suits your trip. Airport transfers
Christchurch Airport is a quick 20 minutes from the centre. Take the cheap Metro bus into the Bus Interchange, a shuttle, a taxi or rideshare, or pick up a hire car from the airport — ideal if you're heading straight out on a South Island road trip. Not really — the historic Christchurch Tram is a tourist attraction, running a scenic loop through the central city past Cathedral Square, New Regent Street and the river, with hop-on hop-off stops and commentary.
