Welcome to Christchurch

ChristchurchŌtautahi — is the South Island's largest city and its main gateway: a leafy "Garden City" of English-style parks and the willow-lined Avon, reinvented since the 2011 earthquake into one of the world's great urban-regeneration stories. Punt the river, wander the Botanic Gardens, ride the heritage tram through a creative new centre, then set off for French Akaroa, the TranzAlpine and Kaikōura. This is the guide we give our own guests — the icons, the day trips, and how to plan a trip.

Gardens & the reborn centre

The Garden City, reinvented

Christchurch pairs leafy heritage with fresh energy. Punt the Avon, stroll the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park, and ride the heritage tram through a rebuilt centre of bold architecture, laneways, street art and the buzzing Riverside Market. The regeneration since the 2011 earthquake is a genuine drawcard — thoughtful, creative and still unfolding. See our things to do guide.

On the doorstep

Akaroa, the TranzAlpine & Kaikōura

Christchurch is a superb base. Just 90 minutes away, the French-flavoured village of Akaroa sits on a dramatic volcanic harbour famous for its tiny Hector's dolphins. Board the scenic TranzAlpine train across the Southern Alps, head north to whale-watching at Kaikōura and the hot springs of Hanmer, or south to Aoraki/Mount Cook and Tekapo. See our day trips guide and the wider South Island guide.

Taste & family

Food, wine & family days

The reborn city eats and drinks well — graze the Riverside Market, explore laneway bars and cafés, and tour the nearby Waipara Valley wine country, just 45 minutes north. Travelling with kids? The International Antarctic Centre, wildlife parks, the gondola and punting make Christchurch one of New Zealand's most family-friendly cities. See our food & wine guide.

Planning Christchurch: your questions

Very much — Christchurch is a resilient, reinvented city and the perfect gateway to the South Island. Punt the Avon and wander the famous Botanic Gardens, explore a reborn city centre of striking architecture and street art, take the tram, and use it as a base for Akaroa, the TranzAlpine and Kaikōura. It blends English-garden heritage with a fresh, creative energy.

Allow 2–3 days for the city and its gardens, the rebuilt centre and a day trip to Akaroa or Banks Peninsula — more if you'll add the TranzAlpine, Kaikōura or Hanmer Springs. As the main South Island gateway, many travellers spend a night or two here at the start or end of a wider tour. See our day trips guide.

Yes — while the 2011 Canterbury earthquake caused terrible damage and loss, Christchurch has spent the years since rebuilding into one of the world's most interesting regeneration stories. The centre now blends heritage with bold new architecture, laneways, street art and spaces like the Riverside Market. Some landmarks remain works in progress (the ChristChurch Cathedral's reinstatement is currently paused), which is part of the evolving story. See our city centre & rebuild guide.

For its abundance of parks and gardens — above all the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and vast Hagley Park in the heart of town, plus the willow-lined Avon River you can punt along, English-style street trees and countless private gardens. Spring blossom and autumn colour are glorious. It's a genuinely green, leafy and walkable city. See our Garden City guide.

It's the ideal one. Christchurch has the South Island's main international airport, sits at the start of classic road trips, and is the departure point for the scenic TranzAlpine train and drives to Aoraki/Mount Cook, Kaikōura and the West Coast. Many South Island itineraries begin or end here. See the wider South Island guide.
