Flying into Queenstown
Queenstown Airport (at Frankton, 10 minutes from town) has direct trans-Tasman flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast — around 3–3.5 hours — plus frequent domestic services from Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. Scenic drives to Queenstown
The drive in is half the fun. From Christchurch it's about 6 hours — a classic road trip via Lake Tekapo and Aoraki/Mount Cook, ideally over two days. From Dunedin it's around 3.5 hours, and from Wānaka about an hour over the Crown Range, New Zealand's highest sealed road. Roads are well kept and gorgeous; in winter, carry chains for the passes. A hire car helps for day trips (Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Wānaka, the wineries) and reaching the ski fields, though ski shuttles and guided tours cover those too.
