Coach, fly, or a bit of both
There are three ways to do it. The coach day trip drives via Te Anau and the Homer Tunnel — a scenic but long day (around 12–13 hours). A coach-cruise-fly combo returns by scenic flight to save time, while fly-cruise-fly makes it a shorter, jaw-dropping half-day over the Alps and Fiordland. You can also overnight in Te Anau. The cruise & the drive
The cruise glides beneath Mitre Peak and the Bowen and Stirling Falls, often with fur seals, dolphins and penguins about. Don't discount the drive either — the road through Fiordland, past mirror lakes and the dramatic Homer Tunnel, is one of the world's great scenic routes. And if it rains?
