Day trips from Queenstown
Queenstown is a superb base. The world-famous Milford Sound cruise, the gold-rush charm of Arrowtown, the Middle-earth scenery of Glenorchy, lakeside Wānaka and the Central Otago wine country are all within a day's reach. Here are the best days out, and how to make them easy.
Milford Sound & Fiordland
The Milford Sound day is the bucket-list classic — a cruise beneath Mitre Peak and thundering waterfalls, reached via the spectacular road through Te Anau and the Homer Tunnel. Arrowtown, Glenorchy & Wānaka
Some of the best days are near at hand. Arrowtown (20 minutes) charms with gold-rush cottages and blazing autumn trees; Glenorchy (45 minutes) leads through Middle-earth to Paradise; and Wānaka, an hour over the Crown Range, offers a quieter lake town with the famous #ThatWānakaTree and the Roys Peak hike. For a relaxed day, tour the Central Otago cellar doors of the Gibbston Valley and Bannockburn. For something wilder, the historic Skippers Canyon 4WD road tells the gold-mining story on a knuckle-whitening (guided) drive. Yes, and it's the most popular — but it's a long day (around 12–13 hours by coach, roughly 4 hours' drive each way via Te Anau). Many prefer a coach-cruise-fly combo, or flying in, to shorten it; some stay overnight in Te Anau. However you do it, the fiord and the drive are unforgettable. Wānaka is about an hour from Queenstown over the Crown Range — New Zealand's highest sealed road, with spectacular views (or via the longer, gentler valley route). A relaxed lakeside town, Wānaka offers the famous #ThatWānakaTree, the Roys Peak hike, Puzzling World and its own quieter charm. It's a lovely contrast to Queenstown and a great day out. Easily — both are close. Arrowtown, a beautifully preserved gold-rush village, is just 20 minutes away and perfect for a half day of history, cafés and (in autumn) golden trees.
