The Kawarau Bridge bungy (43 m) was the world's first, back in 1988 — still going, still a rite of passage. Go bigger on the Nevis (134 m, New Zealand's highest) or the town-top Ledge, brave the Shotover Canyon Swing, or freefall on a tandem skydive over Lake Wakatipu. At the historic Kawarau Bridge (43 m) — the world's first commercial bungy, opened by AJ Hackett in 1988, about 20 minutes from town. For bigger thrills, the Nevis is a huge 134 m (New Zealand's highest), and the Ledge bungy and swing sit right above town at the top of the gondola. No — most are for first-timers. Tandem skydives, guided rafting, jet boats, the canyon swing and bungy all take complete beginners with full instruction and professional operators. There are usually minimum ages and weight limits, so check when booking, and choose your thrill level — the jet boat and gondola luge suit those who'd rather keep their feet (mostly) on the ground.
