Things to do in Cairns
Cairns is a launch pad first and a city second — most days you'll be out on the reef or up in the rainforest. But the city itself is a relaxed, tropical base with a lively waterfront, great markets and enough to fill your arrival and departure days. Here's the pick of it, from the big-ticket day trips to the easy things right in town.
The must-dos
Four experiences define a Cairns trip, and each deserves a full day: the Great Barrier Reef by boat; the ancient Daintree and Cape Tribulation; Kuranda by Skyrail and Scenic Railway; and the waterfalls and crater lakes of the Atherton Tablelands. Add the beaches of Port Douglas and you have a week that's hard to beat.
The Esplanade, markets & more
Cairns city centres on its waterfront. The free, patrolled Esplanade Lagoon is the city's swimming spot (there's no beach), fringed by grass, barbecues and a boardwalk that comes alive at dusk. Rusty's Markets (Fri–Sun) overflow with tropical fruit, seafood and street food; the Cairns Aquarium showcases reef and rainforest life; and the free Flecker Botanic Gardens are a lush, easy wander. Families gravitate to Muddy's Playground on the foreshore, and shoppers to the Cairns Night Markets.

The big two are offshore and inland — the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest (Daintree, Kuranda, the Tablelands). In the city itself, top things to do include the free Esplanade Lagoon, Rusty's Markets, the Cairns Aquarium, the Botanic Gardens and the buzzing Esplanade boardwalk and night markets.
