Where to stay in Cairns
Where you base yourself shapes the trip. Cairns gives you three very different options within an hour of each other — the lively city and Esplanade, the sandy northern beaches, and upmarket Port Douglas. Here's how to choose, and who each area suits.
Cairns city & the Esplanade
Staying in the city puts you walking distance from the reef boats at the Reef Fleet Terminal, the restaurants and bars of the Esplanade, and the free saltwater Lagoon — the city's swimming spot, since there's no beach. It's the best-value, best-connected base, from backpacker hostels to waterfront hotels, and ideal for first-timers and anyone wanting to be in the middle of it.
The northern beaches
Twenty to thirty minutes north, the northern beaches trade the buzz for the beach. Palm Cove is the upmarket, boutique flagship — spas, fine dining and a beautiful esplanade — while Trinity Beach is relaxed and family-friendly around a sheltered bay. Quieter Clifton, Kewarra and Yorkeys Knob suit those after a residential feel. Several beaches have stinger nets patrolled in season.
Port Douglas
An hour north, Port Douglas is the region's premier resort town — sophisticated but low-key, with Four Mile Beach, the restaurants of Macrossan Street, and the shortest reach to both the pristine Agincourt outer reef and the Daintree. Where to stay: your questions
Three main choices. Cairns city (the Esplanade) is central, lively and best for reef departures, with every budget covered — but no beach (the Lagoon is the swimming spot). The northern beaches (Palm Cove, Trinity Beach) offer sand and a resort feel 20–30 minutes north. Port Douglas, an hour north, is upmarket and relaxed, and closest to both the outer reef and the Daintree.
Cairns city suits first-timers, budget travellers and anyone wanting nightlife, restaurants and easy reef access. Port Douglas suits couples, families and anyone after a slower, more upmarket resort stay with a beach on the doorstep. Many visitors do both — a few nights in Cairns for the reef and Tablelands, then Port Douglas for the Daintree and downtime.
Not in the city — the Cairns foreshore is tidal mudflat, so "waterfront" city hotels look over the inlet and the Esplanade Lagoon rather than a swimming beach. For genuine beachfront, stay at the northern beaches (Palm Cove, Trinity Beach) or Port Douglas (Four Mile Beach).
Trinity Beach and Palm Cove on the northern beaches are family favourites — calm, patrolled swimming in season, self-contained apartments and an easy pace. Port Douglas resorts also work well for families. In the city, look for hotels with good pools near the Lagoon and the Esplanade.
Five to seven nights lets you cover the reef, the Daintree, Kuranda and the Tablelands without rushing, plus beach time. If you're splitting your stay, three or four nights in Cairns and two or three in Port Douglas is a popular combination.
