Getting around Cairns
Cairns is easy to get around — reef boats leave from the city waterfront, the airport is minutes away, and Queensland's 50-cent flat fare makes buses almost free. For the reef and the city you won't need a car; for the Tablelands and the Daintree, a hire car or a guided tour is the way to go. Here's how it all works in 2026.
Buses, taxis & rideshare
Around the city and out to the northern beaches, TransLink buses, taxis and rideshare (Uber, DiDi) have you covered — and at 50 cents a trip, the bus is unbeatable value if you're not in a hurry. Reef departures are all walking distance from central Esplanade hotels. For the reef and a city-based stay, you genuinely don't need a car.
Car hire & transfers
The inland and northern day trips are where wheels help. A hire car (all majors are at the airport) is the flexible way to explore the Atherton Tablelands and drive to the Daintree — the sealed road and the river ferry make it straightforward. Prefer not to drive the distances or the winding range roads? Guided day tours include transport and local knowledge, and door-to-door shuttles and private transfers connect Cairns, the airport and Port Douglas daily.
Cairns Airport
Cairns Airport (CNS) sits about 7 km north of the CBD, a 10–15 minute drive. It has direct domestic flights with Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar (Brisbane is around two hours) plus a range of international routes across Asia and the Pacific. From the terminal you'll find taxis, rideshare, shared shuttles, private transfers and car hire; Port Douglas transfers meet flights too.

But a car is the easy way to explore the Atherton Tablelands and the Daintree, which are spread out with limited public transport. Many visitors hire a car for the inland days or join guided tours that include transport.
Queensland has a flat 50-cent fare on TransLink public transport — including Cairns-region buses — for any journey, however far, when you tap a go card or contactless card. It's one of the best-value transport deals in the country (dedicated school services and the Airtrain are excluded).
Cairns Airport is only about 7 km north of the CBD — roughly 10–15 minutes. Options include taxis (~A$25–35 to the city), rideshare (Uber/DiDi), shared shuttles, private transfers and car hire from the terminal. Many hotels and tours also offer transfers.
Port Douglas is about 66 km / one hour north along the Captain Cook Highway. Door-to-door shuttle buses and private transfers run daily between Cairns (and the airport) and Port Douglas, or it's a straightforward, scenic self-drive.
