Kuranda, by cableway & railway
Half an hour from Cairns but a world away, Kuranda sits high in the rainforest above the city — and getting there is half the fun. You can float over the canopy on the Skyrail cableway or wind up the ranges on the heritage Scenic Railway, both taking in Barron Falls and Barron Gorge. At the top waits a laid-back village of markets, galleries and wildlife.
Skyrail & the Scenic Railway
The signature Kuranda day pairs the two iconic routes. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway carries you in gondolas just above the treetops between Smithfield and Kuranda, with stops at Red Peak (a canopy boardwalk with a ranger talk) and Barron Falls (lookouts over the gorge). The Kuranda Scenic Railway climbs a 34 km heritage line built in the 1880s, past waterfalls and through 15 tunnels, pausing at Barron Falls for photos.
Kuranda village & wildlife
Kuranda rewards a wander. The Heritage Markets and Original Rainforest Markets are full of local art, craft, jewellery and tropical produce, and the village is dotted with wildlife experiences — the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld, Koala Gardens — plus rainforest riverboat cruises on the Barron. Shady walking tracks lead to swimming holes and lookouts. It's easy, green and unhurried.
Kuranda: your questions
The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is closed for a major upgrade from 20 July to 18 August 2026, then runs a modified, reduced service until 25 October 2026 (with some extra Monday and Tuesday closures). If your visit falls in that window, take the Kuranda Scenic Railway up and back instead — it's a wonderful experience in its own right. Always check Skyrail's current status before booking.
The classic combination is up on one, down on the other: the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway glides over the rainforest canopy with stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls, while the Kuranda Scenic Railway winds up a heritage line past waterfalls and through tunnels, with a photo stop at Barron Falls. During the 2026 Skyrail upgrade, the railway runs both ways.
A full day is ideal. Allow around 1.5 hours each way for the Skyrail and railway, plus 2–3 hours in Kuranda village itself for the markets, the rainforest, and wildlife experiences like the Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld or Koala Gardens. Many people go up mid-morning and come down mid-afternoon.

Browse the Heritage Markets and Original Rainforest Markets (art, craft and local produce), meet koalas, wallabies and reptiles, walk through the Butterfly Sanctuary, or take a rainforest riverboat. It's relaxed, shady and easy to explore on foot.
Barron Falls is a dramatic waterfall in Barron Gorge National Park, seen from both the Skyrail (there's a dedicated station and boardwalk lookouts) and the Scenic Railway (which pauses for photos). It's at its thundering best in the wet season (Dec–April); in the dry it's gentler but the gorge views are still superb.
