The Big View

Marions Lookout

Marions Lookout serves up one of Cradle Mountain’s finest views for a half-day’s effort. The track climbs steeply from Dove Lake — with a chain to help on the final pitch — to a plateau edge with a sweeping outlook over Dove Lake and Crater Lake, the jagged peak looming behind. It’s a rewarding goal in itself and the gateway to the summit and the Overland Track. Dress warm and waterproof: up here the weather can bring four seasons in a day.

Marions Lookout — FAQ

How hard is the climb to Marions Lookout?

It’s a steep, rewarding half-day walk. The final pitch is a sharp climb with a chain to help in places, so it suits reasonably fit walkers in good footwear. Alpine weather can turn fast, so carry warm, waterproof layers.

What is the view from Marions Lookout?

From the top you get one of the park’s great outlooks — a sweeping view back over Dove Lake and Crater Lake with the jagged peak of Cradle Mountain rising behind. It’s a highlight in its own right.

How long does Marions Lookout take?

Allow around 2–3 hours return from Dove Lake, more with photo stops. Many combine it with part of the Dove Lake Circuit for a fuller half-day loop.

Is Marions Lookout on the way to the summit?

Yes — the route to the Cradle Mountain summit and the start of the Overland Track both climb past Marions Lookout, so it’s the gateway to the higher country.

The walk starts near Dove Lake, reached by the park shuttle, which is often mandatory in peak season. A national-park pass is required — check current details before you go.
