If you do one walk at Cradle Mountain, make it the Dove Lake Circuit. This easy ~6 km loop (about 2–3 hours) traces the shore of the dark, still lake directly beneath the jagged peak, passing the iconic boatshed, pockets of ancient rainforest and quiet pebble beaches. Mostly boardwalk and formed track, it’s the perfect introduction to the World Heritage wilderness — just dress for four seasons in a day.

How long is the Dove Lake Circuit?
The Dove Lake Circuit is about 6 km and takes most walkers 2–3 hours at an easy pace. It loops right around the lake beneath the jagged peak of Cradle Mountain, largely on boardwalk and formed track.
Is the Dove Lake Circuit hard?
It’s one of the easier walks in the park — mostly flat and well-formed, with a few gentle rises and some rocky sections. Good footwear and a warm, waterproof layer are wise, as alpine weather can bring four seasons in a day.
Where is the Dove Lake boatshed?
The much-photographed boatshed sits on the western shore of Dove Lake, a short walk from the car park — a classic Cradle Mountain image with the peak behind. It’s a highlight of the circuit either way you walk it.
How do you get to Dove Lake?
A shuttle bus runs from the visitor centre to the Dove Lake car park and is often mandatory in peak season, when private cars are turned back. A national-park pass is required — see getting around & the shuttle.
Which way should you walk the circuit?
Either direction works. Many walk clockwise to reach the boatshed early, but going anticlockwise keeps the peak ahead of you. Allow extra time for photos, and start early to enjoy it before the crowds.
