The Overland Track is one of the world’s great multi-day walks — roughly 65 km over about six days, from Cradle Mountain south through the alpine heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area to Lake St Clair. Walkers cross buttongrass moorland and ancient rainforest, pass tarns and waterfalls, and can side-trip to peaks along the way. A booking system and fee apply from October to May, when the track is walked north to south. It’s a serious, self-sufficient adventure — and an unforgettable one.

The Overland Track — FAQ

How long is the Overland Track?

The Overland Track runs about 65 km from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair and takes most walkers around six days, staying at huts and campsites along the way. Side trips to peaks and waterfalls add extra distance.

Do you need to book the Overland Track?

Yes — a booking system applies and, from October to May, walkers must book, pay a fee and walk north to south. Numbers are capped in that season. Check current fees, dates and rules before you plan, as they change.

How hard is the Overland Track?

It’s a serious multi-day wilderness walk over alpine terrain, with mud, boardwalk, climbs and fully exposed sections. You carry your own gear and food and must be self-sufficient and ready for cold, wind and snow at any time of year.

Where does the Overland Track finish?

It ends at Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest natural freshwater lake. Many walkers take the ferry across the lake or walk the final stretch to the visitor centre — check current ferry details.

Can you walk part of the Overland Track?

Yes — day walkers can sample the northern end from Cradle Mountain, including the climb via Marions Lookout, without booking the full track. For the whole walk, guided options exist — enquire to plan it.
