Day trips from Auckland
Auckland is the springboard for the upper North Island. Within a few hours lie the glowworm caves of Waitomo, the Shire of Hobbiton, the geysers and Māori culture of Rotorua, the subtropical Bay of Islands, and the beaches of the Coromandel. Here are the best days out, and how to make them easy.
Waitomo, Hobbiton & Rotorua
Head south for the headline trips. The Waitomo Caves (about 2 hours) glitter with glowworms — by boat or black-water raft — and the Hobbiton movie set near Matamata (~2.5 hours) brings Middle-earth to life. The Bay of Islands & Coromandel
To the north, the subtropical Bay of Islands (~3 hours) dazzles with 144 islands, dolphin cruises and the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds — best as an overnight or a guided Northland tour. To the east, the Coromandel Peninsula (~2 hours) offers Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove (check current track access after storm damage; boat tours also visit). Both reward a relaxed pace. Waiheke & the west coast

The Coromandel Peninsula, about 2 hours east, is famous for Hot Water Beach (dig your own hot pool at low tide) and Cathedral Cove. Note that the Cathedral Cove walking track has been affected by storms and access can be limited — please check current conditions; boat and kayak tours also visit the cove.
