Auckland is a harbour city, so the ferries are half the fun. Walk, ride & ferry
The central city is walkable (with a few hills), and the Auckland Transport (AT) buses and trains handle the rest, using a tap-on AT HOP card. The real treat, though, is the ferry — hop across to Devonport for skyline views and a seaside village, or out to Waiheke and Rangitoto. It's scenic, easy and quintessentially Auckland. When you'll want wheels
For the central city and the gulf you can happily go car-free — and skip downtown parking and traffic. But a hire car comes into its own for the west-coast beaches (Piha, Muriwai) and day trips to Waitomo, the Coromandel and Northland, where public transport is limited. Prefer not to drive? Airport transfers & traffic
Auckland Airport is about 21 km (30–45 minutes) from the centre — take the SkyDrive bus, a shuttle, taxi or rideshare, or a hire car.
