North Island itineraries
The North Island is made for a road trip. With good roads and manageable distances, you can link geysers, glowworms, volcanoes, beaches and cities in one satisfying loop. Whether you have five days or two weeks, here are the routes we build most often for our guests — easy to shorten, extend or tailor to your interests.
7–10 days: the highlights
Our most popular route: begin in Auckland, head north to the Bay of Islands, then loop south via Waitomo and Hobbiton to Rotorua for geysers and Māori culture. Continue to Taupō and Tongariro's volcanoes, across to Art Deco Napier, and finish in the capital, Wellington. It threads the island's best together at a relaxed pace. See our New Zealand tours.
5 days, or two weeks
Short on time? A 5-day loop from Auckland takes in Waitomo and Hobbiton, Rotorua and Taupō — the volcanic heart in a nutshell. Have longer? A two-week trip adds the Bay of Islands, the Coromandel's beaches and Hawke's Bay wine country, and leaves room to slow down. We'll match the length to your holiday. See our getting around guide.
Family, culture & two islands
We tailor to your interests: a family route leaning on Rotorua, Hobbiton and the beaches; a culture and volcanoes route through Waitangi, Rotorua and Tongariro; or a two-island trip crossing Cook Strait to the south. Tell us who's travelling and what you love, and we'll shape the perfect North Island journey. See our enquiry page.
North Island itineraries: your questions
A classic 7–10 day loop runs Auckland → Bay of Islands → back via Waitomo and Hobbiton → Rotorua → Taupō and Tongariro → Napier → Wellington. It links the island's culture, volcanoes, caves and cities at a comfortable pace. Shorten or extend it to suit your time. See our New Zealand itineraries for the full-country picture.
Around 7–10 days covers the highlights without rushing; 5 days works for a focused loop (Auckland, Rotorua, Waitomo/Hobbiton and Taupō); and two weeks lets you add the Bay of Islands, Coromandel and Hawke's Bay. We tailor the length to your trip. See our getting around guide.
The favourite is the central loop: Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo and Hobbiton, on to Taupō and the Tongariro volcanoes, across to Art Deco Napier, then down to Wellington — with the option to add the Bay of Islands in the north or the Coromandel's beaches. Good roads and manageable distances make it an easy, scenic drive. See our Coromandel guide.
Yes — many visitors do both, crossing Cook Strait by ferry from Wellington to Picton. Allow around two to three weeks for a satisfying two-island trip. Start in Auckland, tour the North Island, then continue south from Picton. See our South Island overview.
Ideal — distances are manageable, the sights (geysers, glowworms, Hobbiton, beaches, hot pools) delight all ages, and bases like Rotorua and Taupō are compact and affordable. A gentle 7–10 day loop keeps drives short and days full. See our things to do guide.
