Where to stay in Queenstown

Queenstown is compact, so where you stay shapes your trip. Base in the town centre and you'll walk to the dining, lakefront and tour departures; choose Fernhill or Kelvin Heights for quiet lake views, Frankton for value and the airport, or Arrowtown for historic charm. From luxury lodges to family apartments, here's how to pick your base.

The best base

Town centre & the lakefront

The town centre and Queenstown Bay are the prime choice — restaurants, bars, the lakefront, the gondola and most tour pick-ups are all a short walk away, and luxury lakefront hotels like Eichardt's sit right on the water. It's the most convenient and liveliest area, with everything from five-star suites to smart apartments and hostels. Ideal if you want to leave the car parked. See our things to do guide.

Other neighbourhoods

Fernhill, Frankton, Kelvin Heights & Arrowtown

Beyond the centre, Fernhill and Sunshine Bay offer elevated lake views a few minutes from town; Frankton is handier for the airport and the Remarkables, quieter and often better value (great for families with a car); and Kelvin Heights is a peaceful golf-and-lake peninsula across the bay. For heritage charm, historic Arrowtown (20 minutes) and the vineyard stays of Gibbston are lovely alternatives. See our Arrowtown guide.

Booking tips

Book ahead for the peaks

Queenstown's best stays sell out early for peak summer (late Dec–Jan) and the July ski holidays, when rates also climb — lock those in months ahead. Shoulder times (November, quieter autumn) bring more choice and value. Whatever your dates and budget, we can secure the right base and build the trip around it. See our best time to visit guide.

Good to know

Where to stay in Queenstown: your questions

For most first-time visitors, the town centre / Queenstown Bay is ideal — walk to restaurants, the lakefront, the gondola and tour departures. Fernhill and Sunshine Bay offer quieter lake views a short hop from town; Frankton is handier for the airport and better value; Kelvin Heights is peaceful across the bay; and historic Arrowtown charms 20 minutes away. See our getting around guide.

Base yourself central — in or near the town centre. From Queenstown Bay you can walk to the dining, bars, lakefront and gondola, and most day trips and tours depart nearby, so you can leave a hire car parked. Options range from luxury lakefront hotels to apartments and hostels. It's the most convenient and lively choice. See our things to do guide.

The full range: luxury lodges and hotels (including famous lakefront and alpine retreats such as Eichardt's and Matakauri, and Blanket Bay out at Glenorchy), stylish boutique hotels, self-contained apartments and holiday homes (great for families and groups), and plenty of mid-range and backpacker options. There's something for every budget, though the best places book out early in peak seasons.

It depends. The town centre is best for walkability, dining and nightlife; Frankton (near the airport and lake) is quieter, often better value, handy for the Remarkables ski field and shopping, and good for families with a car. Both are 10 minutes apart by road or bus. Arrowtown suits those wanting historic charm. We can match the area to your trip. See our getting around guide.

As early as you can for peak dates. Queenstown fills and prices rise in peak summer (late Dec–Jan) and the ski-season school holidays (July), often months ahead. Shoulder seasons — November and quieter parts of autumn — offer more choice and value. As a family-run agency, we can secure the right base as part of your trip. See our best time to visit guide.
