Welcome to the Americas Journal

A long flight, a vast region, a lot of decisions.

The Americas is the most diverse single region most Australian travellers ever tackle - from Machu Picchu's stone terraces to Patagonia's glaciers, from the New York skyline to the Galapagos at dawn. The flight time is real (13-17 hours each way), the visa rules vary by country, and the budget swings are enormous.

This is the planning ground for trips that pay back the long-haul. Every guide is written for Australian travellers specifically: AUD pricing, Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane departure realities, ESTA quirks, Smartraveller-aligned safety advice, and packing lists that account for hopping between Andean cold and Amazon humidity in the same fortnight.

About this Journal

Aussie-licensed, specialist-written.

Cooee Tours is a Brisbane-based ATAS-accredited tour operator. Our Americas itineraries are curated from Australia by Sophie Leclerc, our dedicated Americas Specialist since 2016. The trips themselves are delivered by long-standing local ground operators in each country - the people who know which lodge has the consistent Amazon wildlife sightings and which Patagonian outfitter doesn't cancel on weather.

Booking your Americas trip through an Australian agency gives you ATAS consumer protection, AUD-priced quotes with no surprise FX charges, and someone in your timezone if anything goes sideways at 3am Cusco time. Read more about how we work, or get in touch for a custom Americas quote.

Americas questions.

Common things Australian travellers ask us before their first Americas trip.

Do Australian passport holders need a visa for the USA?
Australians enter the USA under the Visa Waiver Program with an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). It costs USD $21 and lasts two years or until your passport expires. Apply at least 72 hours before departure - longer if you need to leave time for any follow-up questions. See our full visa guide for ESTA application steps.
What's the best time of year for a South America trip?
South America's seasons are opposite to ours, so May to September (the local dry season in most of the continent) is generally best for Peru's Inca Trail, the Galapagos, and southern Brazil. Patagonia peaks November to March. The Amazon is rainier December to May but wildlife is still excellent year-round. Our When to Go guide has a month-by-month region cheat sheet.
How long should an Americas trip from Australia be?
Given 13-17 hour flight times each way (Sydney-LAX, Sydney-Santiago), we recommend a minimum of 14-21 days for any first trip. Most clients combine two regions - for example USA plus Mexico, or Peru plus Galapagos, or Buenos Aires plus Patagonia. The 28-day Grand Tour in our itinerary guide is a popular once-in-a-lifetime option.
Is Latin America safe for Australian travellers?
The standard tourist circuits in Peru, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the major Mexican destinations are routinely visited by Australians with no issues. Common-sense precautions around pickpocketing in big cities (Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico City) are essential. Always check Smartraveller.gov.au for current advisories. Our Americas Safety Guide covers country-by-country risk ratings.
Can I combine North America and South America in one trip?
Yes, and the open-jaw flight pricing often works out the same as a single-region return ticket. Common combinations are USA West Coast plus Peru, or Florida plus Costa Rica. Santiago and Lima are the best South American hubs to connect onward to North America without backtracking.
Does Cooee Tours operate Americas tours directly?
Yes - we curate and sell Americas itineraries directly as an ATAS-accredited Australian tour operator, working with vetted local ground operators in each country. That gives you AUD pricing, Australian consumer protection, and a contact in your timezone if anything changes. Get in touch with Sophie Leclerc, our Americas Specialist, for a custom quote.
