The Region

An hour north of Sydney, a different country

The Central Coast is the NSW coastal region between Sydney and Newcastle — a string of beach towns, three coastal lakes, dramatic clifftop national parks and the heritage waterways of the Hawkesbury. Genuinely underrated as a day-trip destination from Sydney.

From Pearl Beach to Norah Head

The Central Coast stretches from the Hawkesbury River and Broken Bay in the south (Pearl Beach, Patonga, Pretty Beach, Ettalong) up through Gosford and Terrigal to the lakes country in the north (Tuggerah Lake, The Entrance, Norah Head, Munmorah). Roughly 60km of coastline, three coastal lakes, and a series of clifftop national parks that the rest of NSW barely knows about.

It's a fantastic day-trip region from Sydney — 75 minutes from the CBD by road, 90 minutes by train — and increasingly popular with travellers visiting Sydney and the Hunter Valley who want a quieter coastal day between the two.

About this region for Cooee Tours The Central Coast is a new region for us in 2026. We're currently designing two flagship Central Coast day tours (Bouddi Coastal Walk and Lighthouses & Lakes) and accepting expressions of interest for the launch line-up. In the meantime, fully bespoke private Central Coast tours are available now for couples, families and small groups departing Sydney.

Common Questions

Central Coast FAQs

The questions we hear most often from people planning a Central Coast day.

Not yet — the Central Coast is a new region for us in 2026. We're currently designing two flagship Central Coast experiences (a Bouddi Coastal Walk day and a Lighthouses & Lakes day) and accepting expressions of interest for the launch line-up. In the meantime we offer fully bespoke private tours of the Central Coast for couples, families and small groups departing Sydney. The Central Coast sits between Sydney and Newcastle on the NSW coast — roughly Pearl Beach in the south to Norah Head and Munmorah in the north, with Gosford as the largest township. It's bounded by the Hawkesbury River and Broken Bay to the south, Tuggerah Lake to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the east. From Sydney CBD it's about 1 hour 15 minutes by road or 1 hour 30 minutes by train; from Newcastle it's around 1 hour south. From Brisbane it's an 8–9 hour drive south, so this region works best for guests already in NSW.
The Bouddi Coastal Walk is an 8km one-way clifftop and beach trail through Bouddi National Park, running from Putty Beach in the south to MacMasters Beach in the north. It takes around 3–4 hours at an unhurried pace and includes Maitland Bay (a hidden beach accessible only by foot), Gerrin Point Lookout, Bullimah Beach and the famous tessellated rock pavement near MacMasters. Grade 3–4 difficulty — reasonable fitness needed for the steps and varied terrain, but it's widely rated one of the best coastal walks in NSW. The Marie Byles Lookout at Killcare Heights is wheelchair-accessible for guests who can't do the walk.
Yes — Norah Head Lighthouse has been operating since 1903 and continues to function today (now fully automated). Guided tours of the lighthouse include climbing the 96 stairs to the top for sweeping coastal views. There are also self-contained heritage cottages on the headland that can be hired for overnight stays. Our planned Lighthouses & Lakes day tour will include a guided lighthouse climb, the Soldiers Beach dunes nearby, and time at The Entrance for the 3:30pm pelican feeding.
The Entrance pelican feeding happens daily at 3:30pm at the foreshore. It's free, has been running for decades, and is the most consistent place in NSW to see Australian pelicans up close. The Entrance itself sits at the mouth of Tuggerah Lake — one of three coastal lakes in the region — with beach swimming, ocean pools, fish and chips, and a walking/cycling boardwalk along the foreshore. A classic family-friendly Central Coast stop.
Yes — fully private bespoke tours are available now for groups of 2–6. Mercedes V-Class, your own driver-guide, your own itinerary. We can build a one-day taste (Bouddi or Lighthouses & Lakes), a two-day combination, or a longer Sydney-to-Hunter Valley loop that includes the Central Coast as a midway stop. Email bookings@cooeetours.com.au with your preferred dates, group size and any specific places you want to include, and we'll respond within 24 hours with a tailored proposal.
