For nearly four decades, Home and Away has invited the world into the fictional town of Summer Bay. The drama is make-believe, but the place is real: Palm Beach, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. This guide covers the show's history, the famous careers it launched, and exactly how to visit the locations yourself in 2026.
A Short History of Summer Bay
Devised by Alan Bateman and produced in Sydney since 1987, Home and Away first aired on the Seven Network on 17 January 1988. From that first episode, the fictional town of Summer Bay was anchored to a single, very real stretch of coast — Palm Beach — and it has stayed there ever since. Nearly four decades on, the show is one of the longest-running and most successful drama series in Australian television history.
The Stars Summer Bay Launched
Few training grounds in world television can match Summer Bay's alumni record. Among the actors who began — or had early, formative roles — on the show:
- Chris Hemsworth — played Kim Hyde (2004–2007) before becoming the MCU's Thor.
- Isla Fisher — played Shannon Reed (1994–1997) ahead of a Hollywood career.
- Heath Ledger — appeared in 1997, shortly before his move to film.
- Naomi Watts — played Julie Gibson in the early 1990s.
- Melissa George — her first acting role, as Angel Parrish.
- Julian McMahon — later of Nip/Tuck and Charmed.
- Ryan Kwanten — spent five years in Summer Bay before True Blood.
It's part of what makes a visit so resonant: you're standing where a remarkable number of internationally recognised actors took their very first steps on camera.
Why Fans Love Visiting Palm Beach
Palm Beach — "Palmy" to locals — is a 2.3 km arc of golden sand at the very tip of Sydney's Northern Beaches, roughly 41 km north of the CBD. The Pacific Ocean rolls in on one side; the calm of Pittwater sits on the other; and Barrenjoey Headland, crowned by its 1881 sandstone lighthouse, rises at the northern end. That combination of surf beach, sheltered harbour, lighthouse and bushland in one walkable precinct is exactly why the show's cameras have never needed to move.
For fans, the appeal is the jolt of recognition. The Surf Club, the bait shop and the Pier Diner, the rockpool, the headland — they're all there, looking just as they do on screen, only bigger and brighter. Even visitors who've never seen an episode tend to leave understanding why this beach has captivated audiences for decades. How to Visit Summer Bay in 2026
When to go
Outdoor filming most often happens on Mondays and Tuesdays, so those days give the best chance of catching a scene being shot. The production breaks for around two weeks in July and over the Christmas–New Year period. Early autumn (March–April) is a sweet spot for warm, calm weather and lovely light without peak-summer crowds.
Getting there
Palm Beach is about a 60–75 minute drive from central Sydney via Barrenjoey Road, though weekend parking near the beach fills fast. The most relaxed option is a guided day tour from the city, which handles the driving and commentary and returns you to Sydney by the scenic Manly Ferry.
Visitor etiquette
- Keep a respectful distance from any active filming — the crew are at work.
- No flash photography during takes; follow any crew or barricade instructions.
- Some scenes use residential streets — please respect private property and residents.
- Swim between the flags; Palm Beach is patrolled in summer.
