How island-hopping works
The Whitsundays are a group of 74 islands off Airlie Beach. Most are uninhabited and protected; a handful have resorts. You can see them on a single big day out or over several days by sailing, depending on your time and pace.
Day trip or multi-day
- Day trips — typically take in Whitehaven Beach, the Hill Inlet lookout and a snorkel stop.
- Multi-day sailing — trades speed for time at anchor, more snorkelling and quieter spots.
- Reef trips — head further out to the Great Barrier Reef itself, often via a pontoon.
The main islands
Whitsunday Island holds Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet; Hamilton and Daydream are the better-known resort islands; Hook Island is a popular snorkelling base. Which you visit depends on the trip you choose.
