Hiking Cradle Mountain

Few places in Australia pack so much walking into so small an area. At Cradle Mountain you can loop a glacial lake beneath a jagged peak, climb to a lookout for sweeping alpine views, scramble to a hard-won summit, or set off on one of the world’s great multi-day treks — all from the same trailheads. Here’s how the walks compare, and how to match one to your fitness and the fickle weather.

From an easy lake loop to a chain-assisted summit and a six-day trek — the mountain has a walk for every pair of legs.

Hiking Cradle Mountain — FAQ

What are the best hikes at Cradle Mountain?

For most visitors the Dove Lake Circuit (~6 km, 2–3 hr) is the classic. Add the climb to Marions Lookout for big views, tackle the hard summit if you’re fit and the weather is kind, or gentler short walks through the rainforest.

How hard is the Cradle Mountain summit climb?

It’s a hard, exposed full-day scramble via Marions Lookout, with steep chain sections near the top, and it’s only for fit, well-prepared walkers in settled weather. See the summit guide before you commit.

What is the Overland Track?

The Overland Track is Australia’s most famous multi-day walk — about 65 km over roughly six days from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, with a booking system and a fee in the October–May season. Check current details well ahead.

Do I need to be fit to hike Cradle Mountain?

Not for everything — there are short, gentle rainforest walks and the mostly level Dove Lake Circuit. The summit and the Overland Track, though, demand real fitness, preparation and the right gear. Pack for four seasons in a day — see what to pack.
