Itineraries — straight answers

For one country or region, allow 10–14 days — a West Coast USA loop, a national-parks drive, or Peru. To combine (say Peru and Patagonia, or the USA and Canada), plan 2–3 weeks. The distances are big, so go deep rather than wide. See our Americas activities.

For North America, a West Coast USA loop or a Southwest national-parks drive is ideal. For South America, the Peru classic (Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu) is the perfect introduction. See our Peru classic itinerary.

Yes, though they're a long way apart — many travellers do them as separate trips. If combining, route via a US hub (LA or Miami); a classic grand tour is a US national-parks drive followed by Peru and Patagonia. See our bucket-list icons guide.

For peak season (US summer, the South American dry season, Galápagos cruises and Inca Trail permits) book 6–12 months ahead — permits and in-park lodges sell out first. See our best time to visit guide.
