The Legendary
Melbourne Sandbelt

The Melbourne Sandbelt is a narrow band of sandy, free-draining soil running through Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs — the same geological conditions that give Scotland's links courses their character. This unique terrain produced a cluster of world-class courses unlike anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere.

Golf course architects like Alister MacKenzie (Royal Melbourne West), William Park Jr., and later Des Soutar shaped these sandy ridges into holes that challenge and delight in equal measure. Every Sandbelt round rewards careful course management, precise iron play, and a delicate short game.

Everything You Need to Know

Best Time to Play Golf in Melbourne

Melbourne golf is year-round, but the sweet spots are autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November). The courses are in peak condition, days are long and mild, and you'll avoid summer's scorching northerly winds. Winter rounds are perfectly playable — Melbourne rarely freezes — and the Sandbelt's free-draining soil means courses stay firm even after rain.

Summer (December–February) brings the risk of hot northerlies that can push temperatures above 40°C, affecting both comfort and course conditions. Tee off early if you're visiting in summer.

Getting Around Melbourne's Golf Courses

Most Sandbelt courses are located in Melbourne's Bayside and Kingston suburbs, 20–35 minutes south-east of the CBD via the Monash or Nepean Highway. Our tours include luxury coach transport from your CBD or Southbank hotel, so you can relax on the way out and enjoy a post-round drink on the way back.

If self-driving, parking at all featured clubs is ample and free for guests. Uber and rideshare services readily reach the area.

What to Bring

  • Soft spike golf shoes or golf sandals (metal spikes prohibited at most clubs)
  • Smart collared shirt and tailored shorts or long trousers (club dress codes enforced)
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses — Melbourne sun is intense, especially on exposed Sandbelt holes
  • Your own glove if you have a preference; gloves are available at pro shops
  • Clubs can be hired on request — contact us 48 hours prior to confirm

Combining Golf with Melbourne's Best

Melbourne is one of Australia's most liveable cities, so make the most of your visit beyond the fairways. The bayside suburbs near the Sandbelt are home to excellent café culture — Brighton and Sandringham are perfect for a post-round brunch. The CBD is a short drive away for world-class dining, the MCG, National Gallery of Victoria, and Melbourne's famous laneway coffee scene.

Ask us about combining your golf tour with a Great Ocean Road day trip, a Yarra Valley wine tour, or a Mornington Peninsula coastal experience.

Melbourne Golf Tours FAQ

Do I need to bring my own golf clubs on a Melbourne golf tour?

No. Premium golf clubs — including irons, woods, putters, and bags — are available on request at no extra charge for most courses. We recommend confirming your equipment preference at least 48 hours before your tour date so we can arrange the best fit.

Are Melbourne golfing tours suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Our guides provide friendly on-course coaching and adapt the pace of play to suit your group. Beginners are paired with patient, encouraging guides who will help you improve your game while still enjoying a world-class course. We recommend our public course or coastal club tours as a starting point before stepping up to the Sandbelt.

What is the Melbourne Sandbelt and why is it famous?

The Melbourne Sandbelt is a band of sandy, well-drained soil running through Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs. Its unique geology creates firm, fast fairways and true greens year-round — the same conditions that make Scotland's links courses world-famous. The Sandbelt is home to Royal Melbourne (West Course ranked in global top 10), Kingston Heath, Yarra Yarra, Metropolitan, and Commonwealth — all within a 10km radius.

Can I book a private or corporate golf tour in Melbourne?

Yes. We offer fully customised private tours for individuals, couples, and families, as well as large-scale corporate packages for up to 50+ players. Corporate packages include luxury transport, on-course catering, personalised scorecards, professional photography, a post-round dinner at a Melbourne restaurant, and prizes — all managed end-to-end by our team.

How far in advance should I book a Melbourne golf tour?

We recommend booking at least 2–4 weeks in advance for most courses. For Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, and Yarra Yarra — which have very limited guest tee times — we recommend booking 4–8 weeks ahead, especially during peak autumn and spring months. Last-minute bookings are occasionally possible; contact us directly to check availability.

What is the dress code at Melbourne's golf courses?

Melbourne's private clubs enforce a smart casual dress code. A collared shirt (polo or button-down) is required, along with tailored shorts or long trousers. Denim, cargo shorts, and sleeveless shirts are generally not permitted. Soft spike shoes or athletic footwear are required; metal spikes are not allowed. We'll send you the specific dress code requirements for your chosen course upon booking.
