The Melbourne Sandbelt is a narrow band of sandy, free-draining soil running through Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs — the same geological conditions that give Scotland's links courses their character. This unique terrain produced a cluster of world-class courses unlike anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere.
Golf course architects like Alister MacKenzie (Royal Melbourne West), William Park Jr., and later Des Soutar shaped these sandy ridges into holes that challenge and delight in equal measure. Every Sandbelt round rewards careful course management, precise iron play, and a delicate short game.
Experience one of the world's top-ranked courses, consistently rated in the global top 10. The West Course, designed by Alister MacKenzie and Alex Russell in 1926, is the jewel of the Melbourne Sandbelt. Guided tours explore championship fairways, the famous composite course used in international events, and the storied history of Australian golf. East Course rounds available as a twin-course day package.
View Tour & Book →Frequently voted Australia's best golf course and a fixture in the world's top 25, Kingston Heath's golden age design rewards every type of player. Majestic pines, deep bunkers, and undulating greens make for a round you won't forget.
View Tour →A private members club renowned for its precision-demanding fairways and impeccably conditioned greens. Yarra Yarra's holes are a masterclass in strategic design — narrow corridors, tricky run-offs, and deceptively fast putting surfaces await.
View Tour →Met Golf, as it's known locally, is one of Melbourne's most prestigious private clubs. Magnificent heathland vegetation lines fairways that have tested Australian Opens and PGA Tour events. A must-play bucket-list course.

"Playing Royal Melbourne with a Cooee Tours guide was a bucket-list moment. Our guide knew every break, every slope — it completely changed how we played the course. Absolutely first-class."
"The Sandbelt package — three courses over two days — was worth every cent. Seamless logistics, great group size, and our guide had a story for every hole. Already planning our return trip."
"We booked a corporate day at Kingston Heath for 14 staff. Cooee Tours handled everything — transport, catering, prizes, photography. Our team is still talking about it six months later. Highly recommended."
Melbourne golf is year-round, but the sweet spots are autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November). The courses are in peak condition, days are long and mild, and you'll avoid summer's scorching northerly winds. Winter rounds are perfectly playable — Melbourne rarely freezes — and the Sandbelt's free-draining soil means courses stay firm even after rain.
Summer (December–February) brings the risk of hot northerlies that can push temperatures above 40°C, affecting both comfort and course conditions. Tee off early if you're visiting in summer.
Most Sandbelt courses are located in Melbourne's Bayside and Kingston suburbs, 20–35 minutes south-east of the CBD via the Monash or Nepean Highway. Our tours include luxury coach transport from your CBD or Southbank hotel, so you can relax on the way out and enjoy a post-round drink on the way back.
If self-driving, parking at all featured clubs is ample and free for guests. Uber and rideshare services readily reach the area.
Melbourne is one of Australia's most liveable cities, so make the most of your visit beyond the fairways. The bayside suburbs near the Sandbelt are home to excellent café culture — Brighton and Sandringham are perfect for a post-round brunch. The CBD is a short drive away for world-class dining, the MCG, National Gallery of Victoria, and Melbourne's famous laneway coffee scene.
