Scenic Rim · Getting there · Transport guide
Driving to the Scenic Rim from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
The complete driving guide to Queensland’s Scenic Rim — the three main routes from Brisbane (Fassifern via Ipswich, Tamborine via M1, Lamington via Canungra), parking and access at the popular destinations, hire car notes, the honesty-box farm-stall etiquette, wildlife caution for dawn/dusk driving, and storm-season closures (November-March). Brisbane-based travel specialists since 1991.
This is the complete driving guide we give our own Scenic Rim guests when they prefer to self-drive rather than join a tour. Queensland’s Scenic Rim is one of the most accessible day-trip and weekend destinations from Brisbane — all main destinations within 1 to 1.75 hours of Brisbane CBD, all on sealed roads accessible by standard 2WD sedans and hatchbacks, with reasonable parking at popular sites. The complication is that the Scenic Rim has three distinct sub-regions — the Fassifern Valley to the west, Mt Tamborine to the east, and Lamington/Springbrook to the south-east — each with its own approach route and driving rhythm.
Public transport options are limited (no train service to the Fassifern, limited bus service to outer towns, no public transport at all to Lamington/O’Reilly’s); most Scenic Rim travellers rely on hire car or guided tour. For travellers who prefer to drive, this guide covers the three main routes, the storm-season cautions, the wildlife awareness for dawn/dusk driving, the honesty-box farm-stall trail in the Fassifern, and the practical detail on parking and access at the popular destinations. For travellers who prefer to be driven, our Scenic Rim day tours and weekend tours include all transport from Brisbane CBD.
The Scenic Rim region we travel across belongs to several First Nations Peoples — the Ugarapul (Yugarapul) people of the broader Yuggera language family in the Fassifern Valley, the Wangerriburra and broader Yugambeh people of the Tamborine/Mount Tamborine area, and the Yugambeh and connected groups of the Lamington and Mt Barney country. Cooee Tours acknowledges these Traditional Custodians and pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging. Drive with care across Country — particularly during wildlife-active hours at dawn and dusk.
The three Scenic Rim driving routes
Each Scenic Rim sub-region has its own approach route from Brisbane. Pick the route by destination.
Route 1 · Fassifern Valley (via Ipswich)
For the Fassifern heritage towns — Peak Crossing, Harrisville (Summer Land Camels), Kalbar, Boonah, and Aratula. Take the M2/Centenary Highway south-west from Brisbane CBD, then the Ipswich Motorway to Ipswich (~30-40 min from CBD). From Ipswich, take the Ipswich-Boonah Road south — Peak Crossing is the first proper Fassifern village (50 min total from Brisbane), then Kalbar and Harrisville are short detours off the main road, with Boonah at the southern end (~1h 15m from Brisbane). For Aratula and the Cunninghams Gap approach, continue south on the Cunningham Highway from Ipswich for ~1h 5m. Fuel: Ipswich and Boonah have 24-hour facilities. Wildlife: significant on the Ipswich-Boonah Road at dawn/dusk — drive cautiously.
Route 2 · Mt Tamborine (via M1)
For the eastern Scenic Rim — Mt Tamborine (Gallery Walk, Tamborine Mountain Distillery, Cedar Creek Estate, Curtis Falls). Take the M1 south from Brisbane CBD to the Oxenford exit (~50 min), then west on Tamborine-Oxenford Road up the mountain (~10 min). From the Gold Coast, the Tamborine approach is via the Nerang-Murwillumbah Road from Nerang (~30 min). The Mt Tamborine roads are tight switchback mountain roads at 50-80 km/h — allow extra time. Parking: Gallery Walk has multiple free parking lots; Tamborine Mountain Distillery has on-site parking; Curtis Falls has a small carpark that can fill on weekends.
Route 3 · Lamington National Park (via Canungra)
For Lamington National Park and O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Take the M1 south from Brisbane CBD to the Beenleigh exit, then south on Mt Lindesay Highway to Beaudesert (~50 min), west to Canungra (~25 min), then south on the Lamington Plateau Road up to O’Reilly’s (~30 min on the slow switchback plateau road). Total ~1h 45m from Brisbane. The plateau road is the slow section — sealed throughout but tight 60 km/h switchbacks through rainforest. Allow extra time, especially on weekends. Springbrook National Park is also accessed via this general approach but turns east at Mudgeeraba; about 1h 15m from Brisbane. Fuel: Beaudesert and Canungra both have 24-hour facilities; no fuel on the plateau itself.
Combining routes: A multi-stop Scenic Rim day trip needs to focus on one sub-region; combining Fassifern (west) and Lamington (south-east) in a single day is unrealistic. For travellers wanting depth across multiple sub-regions, a 2-3 day weekend works much better — see our 3-day Scenic Rim weekend tour for a worked example.
Driving conditions and cautions
Honest detail on what you’ll encounter — storm season, wildlife, road grades, hire car notes.
Storm season (November-March)
Queensland summer brings afternoon thunderstorms that can briefly flood minor local roads — particularly the dirt-sealed sections south of Boonah, the approaches to Mt Barney NP, and the Lamington Plateau Road during major events. The main highways (Cunningham Highway, Ipswich-Boonah Road, M1) are generally weather-resilient. Check the Bureau of Meteorology before driving the rural Scenic Rim in summer afternoons; if flash-flood warnings are active, delay or use main highways only. The Lamington Plateau Road occasionally closes during major storm events — if rain is heavy, consider a Fassifern day instead.
Wildlife — dawn and dusk caution
Kangaroos and wallabies are common at dawn and dusk along all rural Scenic Rim roads, particularly the Ipswich-Boonah Road through the Fassifern, the roads through Mt Barney NP, and the Lamington Plateau Road. Drive cautiously between sunset and sunrise; avoid the rural Scenic Rim between 5pm-9pm in winter (peak wildlife activity). Possums, echidnas and the occasional koala also use roadside verges. Slow down through forest sections. If you hit wildlife, pull over safely and call WIRES (1300 094 737) or the local council line.
2WD versus 4WD
All main Scenic Rim tourist destinations are accessible by standard 2WD sedans or hatchbacks on sealed roads. The Lamington Plateau Road and Springbrook Road have steep gradients but are sealed throughout. Carr’s Lookout above Mount Alford is on a sealed road. The only sections requiring 4WD are remote tracks in Mt Barney National Park or some forest reserves — not standard tourist routes.
Hire car notes
All major car hire companies (Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Thrifty) operate from Brisbane Airport, Brisbane CBD, and the Gold Coast Airport. Standard 2WD sedans or hatchbacks are sufficient for all main destinations. Petrol stations: Ipswich, Boonah, Aratula, Tamborine, Canungra and Beaudesert all have 24-hour facilities; no fuel on the Lamington plateau itself. Insurance: standard hire car cover applies for sealed-road Scenic Rim driving; check policy if you plan any unsealed tracks in Mt Barney NP.
Honesty-box farm stalls (Fassifern)
The Ipswich-Boonah Road between Peak Crossing and Boonah is dotted with honesty-box farm stalls — small unattended roadside stalls selling seasonal produce direct from growers with an honesty cash tin. Common produce includes carrots (the Fassifern signature crop), potatoes, onions, pumpkins, melons (in season), citrus and avocados. Carry small change ($2 coins are the standard); leave the cash in the tin; take the produce direct. These stalls are part of the genuine pastoral character of the Fassifern corridor.
If you’re driving the Lamington Plateau Road: Allow the full 30 minutes from Canungra to O’Reilly’s — the road is tight, switchback, and a 60 km/h speed zone for much of the distance. Drive in daylight where possible. Avoid the plateau road in heavy rain (poor visibility, slippery rainforest sections). The drive itself is part of the Lamington experience — don’t rush it.
Honest answers before you drive
Questions our Scenic Rim specialists answer most often about getting there.
How do I get to the Scenic Rim from Brisbane?
Three main routes by sub-region. Fassifern Valley: M2/Centenary then Ipswich Motorway to Ipswich, then Ipswich-Boonah Road south. ~1h 15m total. Mt Tamborine: M1 south to Oxenford exit, then Tamborine-Oxenford Road. ~1 hour. Lamington National Park: M1 south to Beenleigh exit, then south through Beaudesert to Canungra and up the Lamington Plateau Road. ~1h 45m.
Do I need 4WD?
No — all main Scenic Rim tourist destinations are accessible by 2WD sedan or hatchback on sealed roads. The Lamington Plateau Road and Springbrook Road have steep gradients but are sealed throughout. Only remote tracks in Mt Barney NP require 4WD — not standard tourist routes.
What about wildlife on the roads?
Significant — kangaroos and wallabies are common at dawn and dusk along all rural Scenic Rim roads, particularly the Ipswich-Boonah Road through the Fassifern, Mt Barney NP roads, and the Lamington Plateau Road. Drive cautiously between sunset and sunrise. Possums, echidnas and the occasional koala also use roadside verges.
Are there storm-season closures?
Yes — storm season runs November through March (Queensland summer). Afternoon thunderstorms can briefly flood minor local roads. The main highways (Cunningham, Ipswich-Boonah Road, M1) are generally weather-resilient. Check Bureau of Meteorology before driving rural areas in summer afternoons. Lamington Plateau Road occasionally closes during major storm events.
Is there public transport to the Scenic Rim?
Limited. No train service to the Fassifern Valley. Translink buses from Ipswich to Boonah exist but no scheduled service to outer Fassifern towns like Kalbar or Harrisville. Mt Tamborine has limited bus service from Surfers Paradise. Lamington National Park / O’Reilly’s has no public transport — you need a car or guided tour.
Where can I hire a car?
All major car hire companies operate from Brisbane Airport, Brisbane CBD, and the Gold Coast Airport. Standard 2WD sedans or hatchbacks sufficient. Petrol stations: Ipswich, Boonah, Aratula, Tamborine, Canungra and Beaudesert all have 24-hour facilities.
What about parking at popular destinations?
Generally easy — the Scenic Rim isn’t tourist-crowded enough to have serious parking constraints. Boonah town centre has free 2-hour parking; Kalbar main-street parking is free; Summer Land Camels has free on-site visitor parking; Carr’s Lookout has a sealed carpark; Mt Tamborine Gallery Walk has multiple free parking lots. Festival weekends (Kalbar Sunflower Festival late July-August) require earlier arrival.
What about honesty-box farm stalls?
The Ipswich-Boonah Road between Peak Crossing and Boonah is dotted with honesty-box farm stalls — small unattended roadside stalls selling seasonal produce direct from growers. Common produce includes carrots (Fassifern signature crop), potatoes, onions, pumpkins, melons in season. Carry small change ($2 coins are standard).
Best route for a multi-stop Scenic Rim day?
For a Fassifern day: Brisbane → Ipswich → Peak Crossing → Harrisville → Kalbar → Boonah → Mount Alford / Carr’s Lookout → return (~200 km loop). For an eastern Scenic Rim day: Brisbane → M1 → Mt Tamborine → return via Beaudesert. For a Lamington day: Brisbane → Canungra → O’Reilly’s Plateau → return. Combining all three Scenic Rim sub-regions in one day isn’t realistic — 2-3 day weekends work better.
Should I drive or take a tour?
Drive if you want flexibility (own pace, choose your own pubs, stop at every honesty box) and don’t mind wildlife caution and storm-season risk management. Take a tour if you want to relax, learn the heritage stories from a Cooee-certified Scenic Rim specialist, and skip the planning. Our Fassifern Heritage Loop, Summer Land Camels day, and 3-day weekend all include Brisbane CBD pickup, transport, and a guide.
