The good news is that almost all of it is quick and online — the key is doing it in the right order and before you fly.

Start planningMost countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date, with a couple of blank pages. Renew early — some destinations deny entry inside the 6-month window, and processing can take weeks in peak periods.
The common ones: USA ESTA (~USD $40, 2 years), Canada eTA (CAD $7), and — since January 2025 — a UK ETA (~£16). Europe's ETIAS (a ~€20, 3-year authorisation for the Schengen area) is being introduced and is expected around late 2026 — not yet required, but check for your travel dates. See our flights guide.
