Hot Air Ballooning Near Brisbane
Balloons launch at first light over the Scenic Rim and the Gold Coast hinterland, an hour or so from Brisbane. The early start is not enthusiasm — it is the only part of the day the air is stable enough to fly.

Hot air ballooning does not operate over Brisbane city itself. Flights launch from open country in the Scenic Rim, the Gold Coast hinterland and the valleys west of the city — roughly an hour from the CBD, which is the first practical thing to understand.
This is not an operator preference. Ballooning needs stable air with minimal thermal activity, and in South-East Queensland that window exists only in the hour or so around sunrise.
As the ground heats through the morning, thermals develop and the air becomes unpredictable. By mid-morning it is unflyable. That is why check-in is typically well before first light and why a flight means a very early start — often a 3.30 or 4am departure from Brisbane.
Allow around four hours end to end: transfer, briefing, inflation, roughly an hour aloft, pack-down and the traditional breakfast afterwards.
Balloon flights are cancelled more often than almost any other tourism activity, and an operator who flies in marginal conditions is the wrong operator.
Wind at ground level or aloft, rain, fog and storm activity all ground a flight. Decisions are usually made in the pre-dawn hours after checking conditions at the launch site, which means you can be woken and told the flight is off.
The practical consequence: do not book a balloon for your last morning in Queensland. Leave a spare day so a cancelled flight can be rescheduled rather than lost. Operators are CASA-regulated and take this seriously.
Balloons drift with the wind rather than being steered, so no two flights follow the same route. The pilot controls altitude only, finding air moving in different directions at different heights.
It is remarkably quiet — the burner is loud in bursts, and between bursts there is almost no sound at all. There is no sensation of speed or motion sickness, because you travel with the air rather than through it.
Baskets are shared with other passengers and everyone stands. Landing involves a firm bump and sometimes a tip, and passengers are briefed on the bracing position beforehand.
There are minimum age requirements and a minimum height for seeing over the basket. Weight limits apply, and passengers over a certain weight may be charged a surcharge for basket balance.
Pregnancy, recent surgery and some mobility limitations preclude flying, largely because of the climb into the basket and the landing. Ask before paying rather than at the briefing.
Closed shoes and long trousers are sensible for the landing. Layers matter — dawn is cold at altitude even in a Queensland summer.
From the Scenic Rim you look across farmland to the escarpment, with Mount Barney and the Main Range on the horizon. From the Gold Coast hinterland the coastal high-rise appears on one side and rainforest ranges on the other.
Brisbane's CBD is visible from some flights on a clear morning, though it is distant rather than the subject. If a city skyline is what you want, this is the wrong activity — the appeal here is open country at first light.
These are third-party CASA-regulated operators rather than Cooee flights. Booking direct is straightforward, and winter mornings — clear, still and cold — are the most reliable flying conditions of the year.
Where we can help is the ground half: a pre-dawn transfer from Brisbane to the launch site means nobody in the group has to drive an hour in the dark at four in the morning, and there is a vehicle waiting at whatever paddock the balloon lands in.
Cooee Tours acknowledges the Turrbal and Yuggera (Jagera) peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Brisbane stands. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
We run pre-dawn transfers to the launch sites so nobody has to drive at 4am. Family owned and operating in South-East Queensland since 1974.
