Overview

Where to Taste — and How to Do It Well

Wine tasting near Brisbane has come a long way. Within an easy drive of the city you'll find a polished flagship cellar door, a mountain full of boutique makers, relaxed rural tasting rooms, and even a handful of urban wineries you can reach by taxi.

The only catch is the obvious one: tasting and driving don't mix. The simplest fix is to let someone else take the wheel — which is what a guided tour does, while also getting you in the door at the best venues and timing the day so you're never rushed.

Where To Go

Cellar Doors Worth the Trip

Sirromet, Mount Cotton

Queensland's most awarded winery and the easiest premium tasting near Brisbane — a hilltop cellar door with Moreton Bay views, around 35 minutes from the CBD. Polished, welcoming and a great place to start if you're new to tasting.

Mount Tamborine

A mountain dotted with boutique cellar doors and craft distilleries, about an hour away. Taste small-batch reds, whites and unusual varietals, then sample handcrafted gin or liqueur — all with hinterland views between stops.

Scenic Rim & Canungra Valley

Relaxed, rural tasting rooms where the winemaker is often the one pouring. Unhurried, friendly and paired with local produce — the place to go when you want room to breathe and a genuinely country feel.

Brisbane Urban Wineries

No time to leave town? Urban cellar doors and barrel rooms around Fortitude Valley offer guided flights and blend-your-own sessions minutes from the city — an easy add-on to a private itinerary.

First-Timer's Guide

What to Expect at a Tasting

Cellar doors are far more relaxed than their reputation suggests. Here's the short version so you can walk in feeling like a regular.

Cellar-door etiquette, simplified
  • Start light, finish bold: work from sparkling and whites through to heavier reds and fortifieds.
  • Small pours are normal: a tasting is a sip, not a glass — it's about comparing, not quantity.
  • It's fine to spit (or tip): spittoons are there for a reason, especially across several venues.
  • No pressure to buy: but if you love something, it's the best place to get it — we carry bottles on board.
  • Ask questions: the person pouring usually loves talking about the wine. Curiosity is welcome.
  • Eat and hydrate: water and a bite between stops keep the day enjoyable start to finish.
  • 18+ only: tastings follow Queensland responsible service of alcohol requirements.

Ask your guide about the story behind the label and how to take a bottle (or a case) home. On private and corporate bookings it can feature front and centre — ideal for gifting, celebrations and client days.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The standout cellar door is Sirromet at Mount Cotton, around 35 minutes from the CBD. Beyond that, Mount Tamborine has a cluster of boutique wineries and distilleries about an hour away, the Scenic Rim and Canungra Valley offer relaxed rural tasting rooms, and there are urban wineries right in Fortitude Valley for tasting without leaving the city. A guided tour lets you visit several in one day.

Individual cellar-door tasting fees vary by venue and are often waived with a purchase. On our tours, all standard tasting fees are included in the price — the guided half-day Brisbane Wine Escape starts at AUD $119 per adult and visits two cellar doors, and the full-day premium tour at $189 visits three and includes a long lunch. Reserve or premium tastings at a venue are extra.

Many cellar doors welcome walk-ins, but the better ones — and any with a restaurant — get busy on weekends and increasingly ask you to book, especially for groups. Booking a guided tour takes that off your plate entirely: we arrange the tastings, time the visits so you're not rushed, and make sure you're expected at each venue.

A relaxed, friendly run-through of a winery's range — usually starting with lighter whites and sparkling, moving through to reds and any fortified or dessert styles. Someone behind the bar will pour small measures and talk you through each wine. You're under no pressure to buy, though most people find a favourite or two to take home (we carry bottles on board for you). Tastings are for guests 18 and over.

Yes — that's exactly what the full-day premium wine tour is built around: three cellar doors plus a gourmet two-course long lunch at an award-winning vineyard restaurant. The half-day Wine Escape focuses on the tastings themselves if you'd rather keep it shorter or pair it with other plans.
