The Gold Coast has a reputation for theme parks and Surfers Paradise nightlife. Both are real and worth your time. But the best Gold Coast days are the ones that go deeper — sunrise surf lessons at Burleigh Heads before the crowds arrive, dramatic hinterland views from Tamborine Mountain, the SkyPoint Observation Deck at 230 metres in golden light, and the kind of local food scene that only a genuinely visited city develops.

This is the itinerary that covers it all — without the rushed feeling that comes from trying to do it without a plan. If your interest is more focused on the city's attractions, see our 25 Best Gold Coast Attractions guide; for the hinterland, our 9 Best Waterfalls Near Gold Coast guide goes deep.

Hour by Hour

The Complete Gold Coast Day

Sunrise to Sunset — Maximum Gold Coast
🌅 Morning — Beach & Surf
7:00am
Depart Brisbane — windows down, energy building
One hour south on the M1. Arrive as the beach is waking up. The drive itself is part of the day.
8:00am
Sunrise headland walk — Burleigh Heads
The Burleigh Headland Walk is a 2.3 km coastal loop with ocean views in both directions and whale-watching lookouts from June to November. The light is extraordinary at this hour.
8:45am
Coffee by the ocean
Burleigh has genuinely excellent cafés — Bam Bam Bakehouse, Commune, Justin Lane. This is not a concession to routine. It's part of the day.
9:30am
Surf lesson — Burleigh Heads or Main Beach
Beginner? Main Beach's gentle break is forgiving. Experienced? The Burleigh point break is legendary, and Snapper Rocks (home of the Quiksilver Pro) is 25 minutes south. Both have excellent instructors.
☀️ Midday — Hinterland Heights
11:30am
Drive to Tamborine Mountain Hinterland
40 minutes inland. The road climbs fast. The views open suddenly. You leave the coast behind and enter UNESCO-listed Gondwana rainforest country.
12:00pm
Hang Gliders Lookout — 500 m altitude views
The Gold Coast coastline stretching north. On a clear day you can see Byron Bay to the south. The Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is 10 minutes away for a canopy-level perspective on the same forest.
1:00pm
TreeTop Challenge or Canyon Flyer (optional)
If you came for adrenaline, this is where to spend it. Thunderbird Park's Canyon Flyer is Australia's largest guided zip-line tour. Don't talk yourself out of it at the top.
2:00pm
Lunch at Gallery Walk, Tamborine Village
Local restaurants, boutique food producers and the excellent Tamborine Mountain Distillery and Witches Falls Winery. Better food than the tourist strip at half the price.
🏙 Afternoon — City & Theme Parks
3:30pm
SkyPoint Observation Deck — 230 m above sea level
On levels 77 and 78 of the Q1 Resort and Spa, the tallest residential tower in Australia. The coastline in both directions, the hinterland behind, the ocean ahead. Sunset from here is spectacular. Add the SkyPoint Climb for Australia's only beachside external building climb.
4:30pm
Surfers Paradise — explore, shop, people-watch
Cavill Avenue at golden hour is genuinely photogenic. On Wed/Fri/Sun evenings (3–9 pm) the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets set up along the esplanade with 100+ stalls.
🌇 Evening — Sunset & Return
5:30pm
Sunset at Burleigh Heads headland
The best sunset spot on the Gold Coast. The sky goes orange, then pink, then something else entirely. Stay for the whole thing.
6:30pm
Dinner at Burleigh — or head to Miami Marketta
Justin Lane or The Fish House at Burleigh for a sit-down dinner. Or detour to Miami Marketta (Wed–Sat evenings) for 70+ global food stalls and free live music in a converted warehouse.
7:30pm
Arrive Brisbane
Salty. Sun-tired. Already planning the next one.
Theme Parks

Gold Coast Theme Parks —
If That's Your Day

If theme parks are the priority, the Gold Coast has the highest concentration in Australia. Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld, Wet'n'Wild and WhiteWater World are all within 20 minutes of each other. A single park is a full day — trying to fit two is ambitious but possible with early arrival and a Fast Track pass.

DC Rivals HyperCoaster Affinity Dolphin Presentation Polar Bear Shores Sky Voyager Pipeline Plunge Calypso Beach

Insider tip: Theme park tickets pre-purchased online via the official Village Roadshow site are typically 10–20% cheaper than gate prices. Arrive at opening time (10 am) — the first two hours have no queues. Fast Track passes for Movie World now cost around $250 per person and are best pre-booked, as they're often unavailable at the gate.

Best Sunset Spots

Gold Coast at Golden Hour

Burleigh Heads Headland
The best sunset on the Gold Coast. The headland trail gives you an elevated view of the beach in both directions as the sky changes. Whale-spotting from June–November.
SkyPoint Observation Deck
230 metres above sea level. The city, the ocean and the hinterland — all at once. A drink at the SkyPoint Bistro & Bar at 5 pm is a very good idea.
Currumbin Alley
South end of the strip. Quieter. The Currumbin Creek mouth and beach meet here in a way that photographs beautifully in evening light. Walk to Currumbin Rock for the elevated view.
North Kirra Beach
One of the few Gold Coast beaches with a relatively unobstructed western horizon. Serious sunset territory — and Kirra Point is right there for surfers chasing the last set.
Why Guided?

Why Book a Guided Gold Coast Tour

What Changes With a Cooee Guide
  • No driving — the M1 at peak hour is not how you want to end a great day. Guided tours handle all transport from Brisbane pick-up to drop-off.
  • Access & timing — we know which surf break is working, which hinterland viewpoints are open, and exactly when SkyPoint is worth visiting for the light.
  • Hidden restaurants — the Gold Coast food scene extends well beyond the tourist strip. Our guides eat here. They know where to go.
  • Maximise every hour — a self-drive Gold Coast day loses 30–60 minutes to parking, navigation and indecision. A guided day uses every hour.
  • Local knowledge built in — including the easiest way to use the G:link tram between Helensvale, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach if you want to add Pacific Fair or The Star to your day.

FAQ

Gold Coast Day Trip — FAQ

What are the best things to do on the Gold Coast in one day?

For a single day, the ideal Gold Coast itinerary combines a sunrise surf or headland walk at Burleigh Heads, a hinterland detour to Tamborine Mountain for Hang Gliders Lookout views, an afternoon at the SkyPoint Observation Deck on top of the Q1 building, and sunset back at Burleigh or Currumbin Alley. This covers the Gold Coast's best experiences without feeling rushed.

How far is the Gold Coast from Brisbane?

Approximately 80 km south of Brisbane CBD — about one hour by car on the M1 in normal traffic, or 90 minutes by train via Helensvale and the G:link tram. Guided day tours from Brisbane include pick-up and handle all transport, making the journey seamless and removing the parking and driving stress.

Is the Gold Coast worth visiting for a day trip from Brisbane?

Absolutely — and consistently underestimated. Most visitors think of theme parks and Surfers Paradise, but the Gold Coast is significantly more varied than its reputation suggests. Burleigh Heads, the UNESCO-listed Gondwana hinterland (Tamborine, Springbrook, Lamington), the food scene at Miami Marketta and Gallery Walk, SkyPoint, and the surf culture at Snapper Rocks make for an extraordinarily full single day.

Which Gold Coast theme park is best for one day?

For a single park day, Warner Bros. Movie World is typically most popular for adults and teens (DC Rivals HyperCoaster, Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster). Sea World suits families with young children interested in marine animals (Affinity Dolphin Presentation, Polar Bear Shores, Nickelodeon Land). Dreamworld offers the broadest range of thrill rides plus Wiggles World for toddlers. Multi-park passes offer value if you're staying multiple days. Book online in advance.

What is the best time of year for a Gold Coast day trip?

The Gold Coast is genuinely excellent year-round. September–November (spring) offers warm weather without summer humidity, great surf, and fewer crowds. April–May (autumn) is also outstanding — comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and the hinterland at its greenest after summer rain. Winter (June–August) is prime whale-watching season off the Spit and Burleigh. Summer (December–February) is peak beach season but busier.

Can I do the Gold Coast in one day with kids?

Yes — with adjustments. Swap the surf lesson for the calm, sheltered water of Tallebudgera Creek or the free Rockpools water-play area at Broadwater Parklands. Replace the hinterland adrenaline detour with Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for the 8 am or 4 pm lorikeet feeding. Keep SkyPoint and sunset at Burleigh. The day stays magical, just gentler.
