Food & Wine at the Carnival of Flowers
Somewhere along the way, Australia's longest-running flower festival quietly became one of Queensland's best regional food events. Come hungry.
FEASTival: the festival within the festival
The middle weekend — 26 and 27 September 2026 — belongs to FEASTival: celebrated chefs cooking live, artisan markets, pop-up kitchens and boutique bars, all folded into the Carnival's second weekend. If you're choosing your dates around your stomach, this is the weekend, and the flowers are still at full strength around it.
The Weekend Table: the Downs on a plate
The closing long weekend (2–5 October) sends diners out across the region for the Weekend Table — a series of producer-led dining experiences that put Darling Downs farmers, makers and chefs at the centre of the plate. These events are intimate by design and book out; secure tickets when the program drops rather than hoping on the day.
The food trail: eat the city
Throughout the festival, a Carnival food trail links dozens of local venues serving festival-themed dishes and treats. It's the low-commitment way to eat well between gardens — follow the trail wherever your walking takes you.
The Darling Downs grows serious produce and raises serious beef. During the Carnival, the whole region shows off.
Any day of the week: cafes, bakeries, pubs
Even without a ticketed event, Toowoomba feeds you well. The CBD and railway precinct carry one of regional Queensland's strongest cafe and coffee scenes; the surrounding towns defend their country-bakery reputations with genuine menace; and the heritage pubs know exactly what to do with local beef. Lunch during the Carnival is never the problem — choosing is.
Wine on the Downs
The escarpment country south of the city grows wine, and a cellar door lunch — Preston Peak, with its views off the Range, is the best-known — makes a natural second-day addition for anyone staying overnight. Beyond that, the Granite Belt's cool-climate wineries around Stanthorpe sit a scenic drive further south for travellers extending their spring trip.
How the coach tours eat
Our Carnival day tours build in free time in the city centre for lunch, so you eat where you like — food trail, cafe, pub or FEASTival stall depending on your date. Overnight guests get the evening program too, which is where the food side of the Carnival really opens up.
